Put the T-Maxx on a Diet!

This is sort of a repost from the Land Rover forum, but i thought sharing here would be helpful for others too.

moving on, i recently purchased a summit(T-Max) EW10K winch for my DII. My DII has an ARB front bumper that hangs the winch out pretty far so I wanted to make it as light as possible. Most of the write-ups I've read on winch "diets" are done to lighter M8000's so i thought i would post some info on lightening up a 10K winch.

my goal was too keep it between 50-55lbs.

Out of the box:

Winch w/cable(3/8" - 94') - 70lbs
w/Cable and Roller Fairlead - 83lbs
w/Cable, Roller and Solenoid - 89lbs - Total weight

94' 3/8" cable - 21lbs

Winch w/o cable - 49lbs
97' - 3/8" Syntheic Rope and crush proof thimble(Winchline.com) ~ 3lb
Winchline.com Aluminum Fairlead - < 1lb
Moved Solenoid under the hood

Total - ~ 53lbs (not bad for a 10K winch with 97' of 3/8" rope)

Hope this helps!

the solenoid fit perfect in the OEM battery box of a DII in the jack spot. as an added bonus the strap that holds the jack down will still work to hold down the solenoid box. i'm very excited about how the solenoid relocation turned out, the cover fits fine and looks very clean.

cut a hole in the bottom of the jack spot in the OEM battery tray on the DII to feed the leads through.

on a final note i plan to get the wireless kit from T-Max so that the hood doesn't have to be opened to run the winch.

I should do this to our M12000. It's a pig with 125' of cable. Just goes to show, its expensive to eat healthy! To drop that weight must have cost a couple hundred bucks no?

I've got 90' of 3/8 rope with tube thimble and premium hook from winchline. It weighs quite a bit more than 3lbs. Haven't put it on a scale though.

I have a silly question....

The place you mounted your "control box", in your battery compartment leaves the remote sticking up, what happens when the hood is down? I just do not understand, does the hood have to be up or at least "Popped" for you to be connected? It just looks that way in the pictures? Can smeone else offer to clear me up on this?? I'm just curious why you did not mount it in the area between the two front light mounts, where everyone else usually does? Thanks.

i have a wireless set-up (not pictured) so the winch can be controlled from inside the cab with the wireless keyfob. IF i did not have the wireless set up then yes i would have to open the hood to hook up the winch controller.

the setup cost $285 shipped for the rope, tube thimble and billet fairlead. yes, it wasn't the cheapest set up but i feel that the benefits out weight the cost in my situation.

not really sure why your's weights so much? this is directly from Winchline.com:
3/8" x 100' of Steel Cable weights 26 lbs vs. 3.6 lbs for Synthetic , saving 22.4 lbs.

Note: "...and premium hook..." The line alone weighs little. The hook, depending on design, will weigh almost as much as the line.
