yep, but i don't want to pay $600+ for a cargo box, and also they don't have hook to tide gear etc. is that the only-one on the the market. :safari-rig:

Hey

Why not build one from 1/2" birch plywood and then you can either carpet it or use truck bed liner coating on it. You could do it for somewhere around $50-$75, and be completely sturdy, use a padlock for security. Then either strap it down or bolt it in using stainless steel screws/bolts/nuts. Just need basic handtools and a plan, get everything at Home Depot or Lowes.

I'm also planning the same project for my TJ, but I haven't settled on the requirements for it yet so I don't have a design.

You may want to think about how much you are willing to spend, since that will partly determine the materials you end up with. Because of my personal preferences, I wouldn't build anything for the jeep out of wood, no matter what it is. But, I'd definitely not make a cargo box of wood, and especially not for that location, which frequently gets wet in my experience.

Start with your requirements, such as--do you want some space under the box to store windows, etc? Would you like to be able to open the box from the top, and do you need to open it from the back? Does it need a drawer at all? How easily & quickly will you need to pull it out and replace the seat, if at all?

I'd like to have a separate, shallow lower drawer just for tools, with a larger upper drawer for camping gear. I'd like enough space forward of the box to allow a fair amount of recline on the seats, and/or to slip in a couple of 5 gal water cans. The top of the box needs to accomodate a removeable cargo tray for lightweight stuff such as sleeping bags, tent, etc.

Rigid makes a job site chest (model 2032) that I think will fit perfectly into the back end of a TJ. I see it as a starting point, at least, for a weatherproof, tamper-proof box. It's all steel, though, and so it would add a lot of dead weight. Aluminum would be nice.

Unless (and maybe even if) the box is 100% weatherproof, it's going to collect sand, water, leaves and all sorts of other crap, and will be a major PITA to clean out without some clever design.

I'd like to collect every idea anyone has come up with--especially for the short wheelbase jeep. This is an area that really needs some improvement.

I've long been pondering this option too. I really would like mine elevated like the olymic basket here Hanging Basket I'd like that but enclose and securable. It looks as though you can lower that one another six inches or so. So I was thinking of using the frame (no basket) as a foundation and building a box up from that.

The reason that I wanted it elevated is so that 1. I can store windows and stuff underneath, 2. my dog loves laying in the back, 3. when I hit water, it has less chance at getting wet. Also, elevated you can secure it more to the roll bars up top. Use bent aluminum to bolt together and RTV/silicone the seams and corners. Lightweight, inexpensive, securable.

Edit: you could even get really creative and mount speakers/cb/something to the side that faces the front of the jeep.

why not use one of the olympic type racks and mod the mount so it mounts to the tub rail in the hardtop mounting holes then make one elevated slide out tray to allow access to the stuff in the front or make the rack tilt still lockable not weather proof but that is an easy problem to fix , let us know what you come up with

As of now I have a hard top, and don't want to complicate an already PITA task of putting on/removing. As far as a sliding tray, I was wondering the benefits of a tilt/lock top. That would cut out a lot of moving parts, and with heavy duty hinges, one could use heavy duty latches to crank down pressure on the weather-strip lined box. These are all just ideas floating around....feel free to manipulate.

Just as an FYI for those looking to build something: strong, heavy duty hinges over a certain length are REALLY expensive. I bought the longest I could find that weren't super HD, and If I can find the link, I will post it. I made a similar arrangement for my truck bed with some slide out trays in it.
