Quarter Share a 2018 Sprinter 4x4

Hi,

I have a built out 2018 Sprinter 4x4. Systems done by Mammoth Vans and the interior done by Snow Boats in Ballard. Interior is minimalist - sleeping for 4, swivel seats to make a living room for 5. No running water.

I’m interested in a partner or three to co-own the vehicle with so that I don’t use it ~ 20 nights a year and have it sit for ~ 340 nights per year.

All receipts available.

Let’s call the total value $120,000 for easy math.

4 owners = $30,000 per owner and 3 months use.

3 owners = $40,000 per owner and 4 months use.

I am the first owner so looking for 2 or 3. Must be located in Seattle and ideally NW Seattle (Ballard / Shoreline / etc.).

Let’s talk. I’m flexible.

People do it all the time with light aircraft, and that's a bigger ongoing commitment when maintenance, storage, and insurance is factored in.

With the right people, I think it's a fine idea.

The reason it won't work is that 4x4's of these types are usually very personal expressions of the owners. They're usually very customized to fit specific needs and no two people will ever agree on how one should be outfitted. I find most builds pretty useless and in bad taste and I'm sure most think mine are as well. I wouldn't let anyone use my 4x4 unless they were buying it and paid me in full first. I won't even let my family drive mine.... but that's all just me and those I know in the 4x4 world are the same way. Good luck though a lotto ticket will have better odds.

It's done on a limited basis in general aviation. Very limited.

If you can't afford it, you shouldn't have built it.

$40k for use of a van that probably isn't built out the way each individual would want sounds crazy to me.

Rent it out when not in use. There's apps for that and whole companies that just rent out 4x4 vans. You're in a great spot for it and will probably make a decent return. Just take the time to nail down the tough stuff like insurance, renter liabilities, repairs etc and I think it will work out well.

I think the concept is good, but if you look to the private plane world for guidance, I think this is usually done with new vehicles. Similar to a co-ownership plan for a vacation home: Set up an LLC, each "owner" is an equal partner, with either one owner, or the Manager of the LLC taking maintenance and storage responsibilities in exchange for a greater share of the LLC. Set an end date, assets are sold on that date, proceeds distributed accordingly. 4 owners and 4 years, means each owner gets an opportunity for "high" weeks at least once during the ownership period.

I think it's actually a good idea, most RV's or "Adventure" vehicles get used only a fraction of the time, if you can find a small group of flexible owners, it could work for everyone.

But in your case, since it's already built, I echo what other's have said - check out some of the rental sites - I was looking at Ourdoorsy.com just a couple days ago, seems like a good possibility.

The term for aircraft is "fractional ownership." It started in the 1990s and was added to the FAA regulations later in 14 CFR Part 91. I'm not current on it now, but was working in the industry when it first began. Hope that helps.
