Questions about 2nd gen 4runners.

I recently moved from a place in the country to the middle of suburbia so I've developed a desire to be able to get away from it all. That feeling led me here.

I currently drive a 96 suzuki sidekick 1.6 which is rusting pretty badly, leaks and burns a little oil, could use some new brakes, and the real killer - is getting too small for my growing family. I can't tow a trailer, so fitting the camping gear means I have to leave behind the baby. Hence I haven't been camping in far too long.

I'm looking for a vehicle that will tow a small trailer, hold two baby seats and still have space in the back, not kill me on gas as this will be my daily driver and be reliable. It also has to be affordable which means used.

my wife had a toyota corolla that she beat on for years without it complaining then she traded it in for more then I paid for my suzuki and bought a matrix that has been great. I'm sold on toyota reliability.

So I started looking around and decided I liked 60 series land cruisers with the diesel. I then found that the newest one would be 22 years old and they are either beat to death or restored and way too expensive. they are also not overly common around here. So I started looking at 4runners.

Today I saw the following ad for a 92
In very good condition. Black, V-6, 5 Speed Manual Transmission, 220K, One woman owner, Serviced Regularly, Well Maintained, Interior in Excellent Condition, Low klicks on tires. One extra set of 4 All Seasons included. $5995.00 OBO.

Having seen the vehicle in person I'd say the tires are new nothing special All seasons, the interior looked good, out side had normal scratches but the driver front fender had some bubbling from rust in the wheel well and the same for the rear. the passenger side seemed normal. Talking to the owner he seemed flexible price wise. It had a trailer hitch in place.

I also saw this ad
1995 Toyota 4Runner 4X4 Gold edition. California vehicle no rust. Incredible shape inside and out. New engine, new transmission at 153k. All Terrain T/A's recent brake work and more.
176,439.
Price $12900

I haven't seen the 95 in person yet but it looks very nice in the photos.

I guess my question is would it be worth paying the extra 7000 for a rust free vehicle with a new engine and tranny compared to a nice truck with a possibly tired engine and tranny and a little rust starting?

$13000 is pushing my budget and would leave me with little to nothing for mods. $6000 is fine and I can still go shopping after words but may have nothing left over after fixing the rust, and getting a new engine and tranny. Although maybe I can swap a diesel in? reliability is key for me in the long run, anything less may result in a divorce ;)

Is the rust an easy fix or signs that things could be really bad elsewhere? I'm assuming either replace the front fender if it's bad enough or simply grind-fill-paint then cover with a fender flare would be relatively inexpensive. The rear isn't a simple bolt on fix but I'd assume the grind and cover with a flare method would fix it.

Are engine rebuild/replacements expensive on these trucks?

Which way should I lean or should I just keep on looking?

Are mods easy to find or will it be custom everything? I tired of owning vehicles where you have one choice for something or build it yourself.

Thanks for any help

I think the price on the 95 is too high. Here is what you can do with 12k in AZ.

You'll get varying opinions on the 3.0 v6, but if I could afford it I'd go for the 3.4 in the 96 and newer vehicles. Read up on toyotas at Yotatech.com to get a feel for it though I'm sure others will chime in here. Good luck.

12,500?!? :Wow1::Wow1: i don't think so. that is way over priced. Like blknblu said go with the 3.4, you'll be much happier. 3.0's have headgasket issues, and really don't have much more power than my 4 banger. the 3.4 is a good peppy motor that should tow a small camper w/out problems. you should be able to find a 96-97 4runner for $6k-$7k in good shape. i think a 4runner will be a great vehicle for your needs.

I bought a 2002 4runner (aka 3rd gen) with 65000 miles on it last spetember for $12k. My bro bought a 2003 4runner (aka 4th gen) with 50K on it a month later for $12k. Neither one of them had any rust to speak of nor any issues and clean titles.

I would pass on both of those 4runners you listed and keep looking around. They're both over priced IMHO. Like others have said, I'd go for the 96-02 (3rd gen) with the 3.4 rather than the 3.0 in the 2nd gens (90-95). Either way though they're still awesome trucks. Be patient. There are great priced 4runners around, you might just have to look a bit harder. And be patient. :D

4Runners are great little 4x4 wagons, good for family travel, off-highway, you name it.

I’ll second the suggestion for a 3rd or 4th Gen 4Runner. While I have and like the 4th Gen, my $0.02 is that it takes a few more mods/money to get a 4th Gen as capable as a 3rd Gen, largely because the 4th Gens 4Runners (and new Tacomas too) are closer to the ground.

Good luck in your search. I suggest finding a nice, low milage mall crawler with no mods and do it yourself, the right way.

Don't pay $12k for that 4Runner! You can get a nice 3rd gen (96-02) for less than $10k. 2 years ago I bought my 97 with 136k (lifted, 33's, front bumper with aux lights and a roof rack) for $9k and I probably overpaid a bit (it was a 5 speed and was nicely set up). With today's market you should be able to do better.

Just for kicks here's more currently listed 4runners
1999 - 155,700km $13995 stock
1992 - 255,000km $8000 lifted
1991 - 336,000km $1500 stock
1991 - 153,000km $10900 Right hand drive diesel jap import
1998 - 200,000km $12500 stock
1998 - 231,000km $11995 stock
1990 - not listed $1500 stock
1992 - 220,000km $2900 body lift
1991 - 140,000km on second engine $5200 stock
1990 - 130,000km $10500 rhd diesel jap import
1990 - 97,000km $9900 rhd diesel jap import
1988 - 348,000km $2500 stock

There are a few more listed but they are similar in pricing. Nothing newer then 1999 is listed. Having been watching for awhile now these prices aren't a strange fluke or anything. The japaneese imports have been slowly climbing in price for the last couple of years as demand has increased. Toyotas in general always seem priced quite high for used vehicles compared to the domestics especially.

Based on those earlier examples and given the current conversion rate on the US dollar it's probably worth the hassle to fly down and buy a truck in the US then bring it back.

I would try to get a 96 or newer Toyota 4Runner or Tacoma. I owned a 93 4 Runner with the 3.0 v6, and although it ran great, I always thought it was kind of gutless for a v6. Well, some guy rear ended that vehicle and totaled it, so I replaced it with a 99 4Runner with the 3.4 v6 and that motor has much more power and still gets decent mileage - I get 18-19 MPG.

I paid $8500.00 for the 99 4Runner in December of 2007 and it had 120K miles on it - I think they are even cheaper now.

FWIW- I have a 95, and I like it. On the highway if I keep it under 70 mph, I can get 18 mpg. In town a different story, more like 14.

It is gutless, but off road, there is some good low end grunt.

The really good thing about the truck is the A/C- I drove my dad's 4th gen around last week, and I was surprised but my A/C is much better.

I also like the tailgate with the roll up window that is a nice feature.

The head gasket problem was fixed by mid 95, so I would not get anything older, unless there is documentation that the recall was done.
