Questions about search and rescue

I've been thinking about doing volunteer Search and Rescue for a long and was wondering if anyone had and thoughts/advice/tips/groups to look up or contact/etc. about it.

If you're in L.A., go visit the Sierra Madre Fire Deptartment. They have a world renown search and rescue team. While you're there, stop in for a cup of coffee at Beantown.
