I have a thread in the Land Cruiser section too if you want to check out the build.
Well, it was a great trip! I have been going to Moab for 25+ years and I have to say I think October is the best time of year to be there. We cruised the trails with the windows down, no wind and perfect temperatures. Mid 60's during the day and just cold enough at night to have to stand around the fire.
So, my son and I left Idaho Falls on Thursday around noon, we had about 4" of snow on the ground, but I drive a Cruiser, no worries here, it snowed off and on until we were on the south side of solder pass. We made great time and got to Moab about 6:30. The first night we stayed at the Motel 6 since my Dad would not be in until around 11:00 on Friday. We met up with my friend Matt who I have known and wheeled with since high school, Matt has done a fair bit of rock crawling in his life, competed in King of the Hammers a few times and is an all-around hell of a good guy. We met Matt, his girlfriend and her son at Pasta Jay's in Moab, if you are looking for some tasty Italian Food, this is the place. We had a few beers, some good food and headed back to the Motel 6. We decided it would be a nice night for a little hot tubing so we grabbed some beers and suited up. As soon as I stepped outside I could smell the chlorine from the pool/hot tub, someone had given it a serious dose of the stuff. It was so bad we couldn't turn on the jets; needless to say we didn't hang out long and called it an early night.
Friday morning we started up the Moab Rim Trail, keep in mind this is my first real wheelin' trip in the Cruiser. Needless to say the Cruiser performed flawless and we were to the top in less than an hour, we continued on to the top of the sand dunes and had to turn around to pick up my father. We arrived back in to Moab unscathed and picked up my dad and his girlfriend at the Slick Rock Campground. This would be base camp for the next few days. My dad has a nice little camp trailer he said my son and I could stay in, but my son insisted we sleep in the cruiser. That's my boy! Anyway, we hit Hell's Revenge that afternoon and did Behind the Rocks on Saturday, all the time having a wonderful experience and not worrying about the Cruiser one bit.
My Cruiser even has the factory head gasket still, oh my, oh my. We took off from Moab Sunday around 11:00 and returned home about 7:00. The cruiser got just shy of 15 mpg the whole 1000 miles and that was keeping it between 72 and 75 mph on the highway. I know, all on the factory head gasket! It's a time bomb, don't drive it everyone says, pfft what is the fun in that! Oh, and I have not done the PHH either! Oh my, how did the Cruiser ever survive the trip! Don't believe all the hype on these Cruiser's, they are great rigs that are completely at home a thousand miles from home. Get out and enjoy them! OK, on with the pics. My dad is a professional photographer so after he sends me all his super-duper pics I will post them up, but for now the crappy cell pics. Enjoy!
Pasta Jay's; we eat here at least once a trip, it is a staple.
MMMMMMM Beer!
15 MPG average for the trip, not bad for a 6K pound rig.
Top of the Rim, Yes Matt drives a Jeep and Yes I forgive him.
I have to admit these tires kick *****! They are great on the highway and not once did I complain about them on the trial. Had them down to 10 psi the whole time on the trail and they hooked up great. I am sold on them!
More from way back on the Rim Trail, this is by the top of the sand dunes.
These pictures are from overlook rock on Hell's Revenge. It is just before Hell's Gate. Yes, we drove up Hell's Gate.
Top of Hell's Gate
This is the only piture I got from Saturday and Behind the Rocks. I know my Dad got a bunch so stay tuned.
