Class A 4x4 rv

Great looking Class C and KLR
I had an extended E350 sportsmobile with the V10 and it got a little crowded in there for the 4 of us so I picked up a 1986 Class A winnebago 26' 4x4 with the GM 454 engine. We get a lot of looks at the campgrounds. We took a baja trip back in 2007 and we loved the living space and overall comfort the the Class A offers. The Class A did great on the sandy baja beaches but would not try anything too technical. I also have a 2008 KLR with 18000 miles and I love it.

Before traveling to baja I had all leaf springs replaced and lifted 4". I will post pictures later.

Enjoy the Class C!IMG_0067.jpg

Nice setup, wish I had 4x4.

I have a Lazy Daze 24 ft. that I carry a Super Sherpa on the back. Had a rack made using 2 hitch points and it is pretty stable back there.
I drag it every so often from the overhang but it seems to take that well.
The problem I have is the extended RV subframe isn't as beefy as the main frame so I get a little flex from the weight, which is about 400 lb.s total.

Having a small class C and a bike sure is nice for exploring and I can get my rig into some pretty good spots out in the woods.

Cool A class. Which springs did you buy for it? Deaver? I want to redo the weak springs on my unit this summer. Right now I'm using Air Lift Bags inflated to 80psi with three lift pucks. The lift pucks are plastic crap. In addition if you allow the rear suspension to unload with no limit straps the pucks shatter. I hate the system that I'm using. I also need to install a sway bar. Any advice.

Jim,

I had a shop in Escondido, Ca custom build the springs for the rv prior to my trip to Baja in 2007. Any suspension shop should be able to help you with your springs.

Very COOL RIG!!! Welcome to the forum.

Another wheeler who's got the balls taking that size of rig in tough dispersed campsites.

No more chrome on my home

A couple more shots of my Qugley converted 4x4 21RB Four Winds RV. This year I ditched the chrome wheel covers and sanded and painted the wheels in a semi-gloss black paint. It looks awesome! I also added an aluminum front box, it increased storage and added weight to my front end. With the the long overhang and the KLR650 on the back of my unit additional weight up front is a plus.

Very cool rig capnjim. I really like the black wheels. If you don't mind me asking, approximately how much was the Quigley 4x4 conversion for the class C?

The Quigley conversion was right around $11,000 if I remember correctly. I think I'll get most of the conversion cost back in the future if I ever sell. We'll see, I'm not stressed about it, I love the vehicle and plan on keeping it for a few more years.

Thx for the info. Enjoy that awesome rig!

864x4RV,

I'm jealous, yours is the first 4x4 Class A I've ever seen. What model Winnie is it? Please share more photos and insights into the 4x4 components/issues as I am starting to convert my 25.5 ft Class A Xplorer 307 into a 4x4.

Capnjim, nice and roomy interior, only achieveable by a Class C or A. My 4x4 21 ft Class B+ RV gets too crowded with gear everytime I go to Baja.

The Winnie looks like an Elandan to me. A few of them were built with forward control Cummins 6BT diesels. They'd make a nice 4x4 conversion too

Kerry,

Good call. It is a 1986 Elandan 26' Class A with the fiberglass exterior. It was converted by a shop in the Cape Cod area and I bought from the second owner back in 2007. It has the gm 454 and TH400 trans. I am now looking to hopefully finding a diesel engine for it. Currently I am updating the interior.

I find the 454 with the TH400 to be underpowered when climbing. The interior room is great.

I used to have a sportsmobile with the quigley 4x4 system, but it got too small for the four of us and that is when I found this class A in the Boston area and drove it to San Diego-great trip.

I will include more pictures later.

Hey Capnjim. Are you running some kind of wheel spacers or adapters to get the front bolt pattern to convert from the single wheel style that Quigley uses to the dual wheel style rim that you have installed?
