Suty Here, after reading and contributing to @#$* Hunters Thread, I was wondering how many Bowhunters we have on board... I am one, I own a 52# One Piece Recurve, made by David Oates of Brush Country Bows. I also have a Longbow, its 56# and was made by Dan Toelke at Montana Bows. I Love this Bow, Smooth,Quiet and It is a Take-Down. Dan uses the Bow Bolt System which allow you to take it apart with a quarter twist at the handle. I have taken Whitetails, from a ground blind, Hogs and Javelina from stalking... I love the challenge of Bowhunting, having to get up close and personal with the game. I like that the Game has a chance to bust you as you try and put the stalk on'em. I have seen many fluffy whitetails running away from me. Sound off and be counted, and remember, Hold Center.....Tu Compadres, Suty

I am still using my old Martin Lynx for when I get to hunt hogs. It's a bit loud, but it's set at 68lbs so it drives em home. Just bought a new bowtech this year but didn't get enough time behind it to take it out. I have hunted with a bow since I was in junior high, and have quite a few white tails with it as well as a dozen or so turkeys and one elk. Killed a bobcat one year when he came out of the barn with a chicken in tow. Dogs put him up the closest tree and all I had at hand was the bow and my 22 pistol. If it had been his first offense I might have let the dogs keep him there for a while and hoped he'd move on when he got down.

Haven't pulled a recurve in years, but keep finding myself looking at them again.

hey

I've got an old beater Hoyt Rambo (yes, from the time of the Rambo movies) which I love, and shoot pretty well without sights. I also have a Bear Kodiak recurve, which I really haven't taken the time to learn yet. I've shot varmints and such with the Hoyt, but nothing big. I took 2 shots at an 8 point the first week of bow season, then decided I wasn't ready to hunt deer with a bow, unless I can get much closer than I was. Practice practice practice!

I've shot a 60# Howard Hill longbow for years now. It's red cedar and beautiful. I usually put my own arrows together. In my backquiver right now are Norway Pine shafts with Grizzly 190 grain broadheads. Makes a nice heavy arrow (750 grains). Favorite "game" : Woodchucks, try stalking a woodchuck! Talk about a test of patience! The young ones taste like rabbit...

Jim, Never have stalked a Woodchuck...Actually never thought about Hunting Woodchucks, Hmm, sounds like a challenge. I too use Grizzly BH's, their as tough as nails, I also use 150gr Wensel Woodmans. I have a Combo of P.O. Cedar and Arrow Dynamics Tapered Carbons I use 100grn Brass inserts, so they are tip loaded, but fly like darts. However, they don't always go where I would like them to. Sometimes my "Darts" fly like I was throwing them in a Pub, usually all of this is attributed to operator head space and timing, Practice, Practice. Your Bow sounds like its a looker as well as a shooter. Tu Compadres, Suty

Jim's bow is sweet, but the arrows he crafts are works of art. You have to see and hold one to appreciate the skill he puts into them.

I started with PO Cedar, but decided they just weren't tough enough. In PA I had some acreage I could walk around with a Judo point in hand and some broadheads in the quiver. After rolling through a dozen PO's in short order, (hit a rock-break a shaft, judo's keep ticking) I found a tougher solution. The pine is stonger and heavier (balances the heavy nose a bit better) and has to take several "bad" shots before they break.

The toughest ones I made was a set of ash shafted arrows for my brother. We ruined field points shooting at concrete blocks and kept the shafts; they were amazing! At 900-1000 grains they are a bit too heavy for a lightweight 60# bow.

Thanks H, Thats one of those time-consuming processes that after you figure in time spent and materials purchased it was cheaper to buy a set made; but they are mine and no one has the same set!

Dang! That Kassai is sweet! Kassai? Isn't that the guy that does the horseback archery? Read something about that in Traditional Bowhunter a few years back...if the name rings true in my head, that is.
