Did you say microbus? That was my first car... my Dad bought it new in '67. Here he is in the late 70s wrenching on it. Whatever happened to the beanbag anyway? Every mechanic should have one of these.

Sorry about the hijack... but you mentioned the microbus, not me. ;)

Yep, my first car was a 66 with a spaghetti wired 12v conversion. Spent many an hour with my head in that engine compartment and my butt sticking up in the air. Should have had a bean bag. Classic shot there.
Back to roof tents.

Thanks for the info guys. I really like the idea of an aluminium base for longevity's sake. I've always thought that 1400-1600 was just a little too much for what you were getting with the other brands.

Todd,
Thanks for the offer...I'll definately take you up on it. Have you seen any advantages to the poly-cotton fabric?

I've got ~30 nights in the "Expedition" CarTopTent unit on my trailer. It has been great but it is showing some serious signs of wear. The cover will likely need to be replaced within the next couple of trips... has a few tears, they could likely be patched?

When we test RTT's we have Scotty sleep in them for 30 - 40 nights. We take them out on the trail and put them through roughly 2 years of average use.

At the end of the test period we make a determination if we will offer the tent for sale. At the same time we provide the importer with a detailed report on the design, materials, construction, and problems encountered with their product.

We also offer suggestions on how the tent can be improved to meet our standards. As I said previously we would love to have a RTT that is top quality but less expensive.

I don't think what we are expecting from the tents is too much, and I don't think that our standards are too high. I think they are very achievable.

Prior to replacing my hannibal I patched the cover with inflatable boat patches, and after replacing the cover I still use the inflatable patches. They are heavy duty enough to take the abuse of speed and temperature and weather. Just apply them to the inside with glue and boom your done.

It's a bit of a religous discussion but Poly-Cotton is certainly a bit more breathable. There are benefits to Nylon as well, but if condensation is your biggest concern, Poly-Cotton may be better. Send me a note and we can get samples of both fabrics for you.
