Rain Coats

Anybody else having trouble finding raincoats for kids anymore? I have been trying to find one for about a year, and I cannot. I've been looking in Walmart, and all the other common retailers, and it seems like nobody carries them anymore. Or if they do, it's a real short run and I miss it. I found a few girls coats on clearance at Walmart, but no boy's. I'm just talking about the classic rubber rain coat. My boy is 4, but probably fits a size 3 toddler, so that's the market I'm in. I guess nobody lets their kids outside in the rain anymore?

I was at one outdoors store and asked a clerk there, and he said "No, we don't carry them anymore. All the kids are inside playing video games and doing drugs."

I guess I'll have to order one of the $50 jackets at MEC. Seems a bit much.

Yup, that's the conversation I mentioned. They used to have a lot more outdoor clothes, but he says they are getting away from it. Rain coats for bigger boys aren't hard to find. It's the 4 year old kinda thing that is.

Gotcha.

When I was looking for rain boots for my little guy (just turned 2) I had a hard time finding some that were his size and weren't pink.
My wife finally found some boyish ones at a garage sale.

She also found a windbreaker style jacket that he wears if it's raining, but obviously he isn't out walking around, just running to/from the car.

I'll have to keep an eye out from now on.

I never had a problem finding boots. That's the strange thing. I guess people feel it's ok to jump in puddles after it's raining, but not out in the rain...

That's exactly what I want. But I find $50 is a bit much. I'll keep my eyes open. ;)

The post was meant to be more of a statement of the times I think.

In kindergardens over here kids go outside come rain, shine or snow. Clothing shops carry a selection of gear reflecting this. Last year we visited some friends in Ireland, which get a fair bit of rain. They could not find rain clothes anywhere. So now their son is the only one in the area with a full set of rain clothes, curtesy of us (from now on known as "Norwegian Foreign Aid for Rain-Deprived Children").

Helly Hansen is Norwegian, BTW. Good stuff.

We've had good success at REI. Particularly the REI branded jackets. It's high quality gear (despite Jonathan Hansen's opinions), and not overtly sexual, so handing down between boys and girls is no problem. I buy them for my older son, and my younger daughter inherits them.

Yeah, I was going to get yellow or something if I spend the money, then my daughter can wear it.

I agree. MEC is very much like REI, and it's all good stuff.

I picked up Marmot PreCip rain jackets for my 3 boys last year at backcountry.com in yellow and orange.

$27 each. They appear to be OOS at the moment, but if you search around you can find previous year versions like this blue one at moabsports.

Bass Pro just started to carry Frog Toggs. That is where I grabbed mine. I also saw they have kids sizes.

Interesting you mentioned that. I just stopped at Bass Pro Shops yesterday in my hunt! I was sure they would have something.

Nope!

All they had were these really cheezy rain suits, for kids and adults, that were made out of... I dunno what that cloth is... it's synthetic, not woven, it's like a randomly oriented matting of synthetic fiber that gets "dimples" melted into it holding it together? It's commonly used on disposable fabric items like painters suits, etc. Anyway, it was made from that ****, and the person helping me made it very clear it only claimed to be "water resistant". For the adults they were labelled as "emergency rain suits" basically. They did of course have better stuff for adults, but that was it for kids.

(Edit: Hmmm... looks like maybe that is the stuff you are suggesting. Sorry, but I wouldn't touch it. Probably wouldn't last at all. It looked like a disposable painters suit to me.)

I also checked a Roots outlet. Nothing there, though they said "We had these K-way like things last week, but we're all out now."

Gah!

I'm going to have to go with this for $54:

http://www.mec.ca/Products/product_...older_id=2534374302734777&bmUID=1277480630060

I'd get the one Superu is suggesting, but the shipping to Canada would kill it.

Rob, hold off a day on that. I might have some gear that needs exchanging for a larger size. Let me take some photos and I'll post 'em up. I am going to start a classified/exchange thread here in the family forum if the Mod's well let me.
