Random Engine Sputter/starting issue

Hey guys, so I got this random engine sputter all of a sudden and its becoming more and more frequent. Last time this happened it was because during a water crossing the ignition control module got water in it. We hit the trails the other day, but I was careful about the water fording this time and don't think I got water up in there.

The curious thing is that the check engine light hasn't come on yet, so I'm thinking it's not a misfire. Someone who shall not be named did run my precious truck all the way down to fumes the other day, though. I threw some fuel system cleaner in it and a full tank of gas (Shell 87) and have gone through a quarter tank and the issue is persisting. I'm hoping it's just gunk working through? Thoughts, ideas for me to check?

Also, I have this random starting issue that has really manifested itself lately. Turn the key to the start position, and nothing whatsoever happens. Not even a click. I'm wondering if it's some sort of neutral/park safety sensor switch or something. But I'm open to ideas on that as well. The only way to get the truck to start is to just keep trying and eventually it'll crank. When it does crank, there's no issue there. I've got an Optima Yellow Top in it, so there's no lack of power, and the battery gauge shows "awesome". Thoughts?

Thanks for your time oh trusted colleagues of the league of Montero operators.

HMMM... I'd say do a load test on the battery. Remember if man built it, it can fail. Check the charging/ starting system. What brand and type of plugs are in it? Also, if the ignition control module got water in it, there could be some corrosion starting to form. That in itself can cause everything you are experiencing.

OK. Well I should have said that the ignition control module was replaced after that water fording incident. I did some digging, and all my wires and coil pack are good. I've determined its just time to get new plugs. The wife picked them up, they're V-spark platinum plugs. Let's see how this works out.

NGK or DENSO? Be sure to use platinum or iridium.. Use nothing but NGK or DENSO.. Trust me!!! Make sure to get an upper intake plenum gasket too. You'll need one. It would also be a good time to switch out the wires. Be sure that when you tighten up the intake that you don't over-tighten the bolts. The lower intake is made of butter. :)
