Range on gas engines and extending? F-350/Ram 3500

here you go.... copy/paste from a previous post about it. (y)

My 6.2 supeduty came with a 32 gallon tank, and rolling loaded with the camper just didnt give me the range I was willing to live with.
Larger "direct fit" tanks hang WAY too low, and cost a small fortune.

My solution was a second tank, mounted within the custom bed I built, giving me a total of 47 gallons.
Complete with its own fuel pump, fuel filler, and manual selector that controls flow from transfer (aux tank to main),
hose (acts as a fuel station to fuel generator or moto) or OFF
I have a switch in the cab to control the pump as well as a fuel gauge for the aux tank.
We routinely use it as a transfer tank, and do it while moving.
Typically run the main tank down to 1/2, then transfer from aux to main.

The tank is a 15 gallon Jeep CJ tank, with CJ fuel sender, tipover valve, and the breather is tied to the OEM vapor recovery system.
5k miles later, no CEL or errors. The CJ tank was the most square plastic tank i could find, and was very cheap.
Pump is a very inexpensive solid state pump, rated at 3-5 GPM as I recall.

Pics to follow, it is located between the wheel wells, right above the diff.

2017+ Ford and 2020+ Ram in long bed configurations can be had with 48 to 50 gallon tanks.

2017+ Super Duty requires the Crew Cab Long Bed for the big 48 gallon tank. That is the ONLY configuration they offer with the big tank (sad). I had a boat tank fabricator build a custom tank for my truck (see the build thread) - adds 21 gallons. So we have 55 gallons and easily over 500 mile range even off road loaded.

Wish one of the tank companies would build replacement gas tanks for these trucks! Only diesel tanks being offered now...

For my gasser extended cab (2011) there is a bunch of space in front of the tank where the DEF tank would go.

Take a peak at the tank under both a crew and an extended cab of these new trucks.
The larger tank from the crew might bolt right into an extended cab truck.

An actual big "gas" tank is not to be found.
But transfer tanks are common. Some automatically fill your main while driving.
Your issue is where to put it.... they won't work with an 8' box and camper. PS I love yer camper.
And as others have said, the big diesel tanks gain capacity with reduced ground clearance.
I think you need a more custom setup.

Maybe a wheelbase extension to fit a tank between the cab and box...... unlimited capacity

The previous gen super duty cab and chassis had a 40gal rear tank with an option for a 28 gal mid ship tank. An f350 can be had as a c&c with a single rear wheel as well. No pickup box (or short bed) but all the cab options are available.
68 gal is double what the pickup model has.

Buddha.

Finally in expo white.

I thought the dual tanks was a diesel only option.

I had considered using the rear mount tank as an aux tank on my superduty,
but the added weight behind the axle, and the reduced clearance (with a full size spare (35") as well)
made it a no-go.

The mid-ship mounted aux tank has proven to be the perfect solution, at least for our vintage truck (2011)
The newer models might have a better option. They are considerably different trucks.
