Yes, he was being sarcastic. I am aware that the TC on my LR3 is superior to my classic with open diffs as well There are some things I prefer the classic for, and others the LR3. Both great in their own way.

Given how terrible the stock tires are, how would our author have faired with just a tire change I wonder? Could he have taken 'the kid'?

"street tires" ? Hell, the red clay will even turn BFG All Terrain into slicks. I know, I've been there with my LR3 fully armored underneath and on 265/65x18 BFG.

This is where the LR3 will start to struggle and it is not due to the traction control or other advances in technology, it is specifically in the neutering of the vehicle by way of severe tire size limitations.

It is truly too bad the engineers created such limitations in the wheel wells. The current Toyota Land Cruiser can fit, in stock form, a 33" tire without any rubbing issues. This means that with mild alterations or dealing with minor rubbing at the extremes, one could fit any number of true mud tires - on a factory 18" wheel. The Ace up the LC sleeve is the ability to also fit 17" wheels which allow for even further tire choices.

I'm thinking that while the LR3 is somewhat an ideal combination for long trips to a locale, the Discovery 2 with it's many modification options could be more suited to going out to play in places like Uwharrie or similar.

I agree with the above.
I also find it amusing that like most of us the author quickly realizes that the terrain response is much more effective if the driver "interprets" the ground conditions and selects 'sand' after blindly assuming mud/ruts is the best way to go.
