I love how no one these days actually considers actually running the max size tire that fits in the stock spare location. The extra 1/2 inch of clearance usually doesn't make or break the vehicle. My absolute favorite is buying a swing out tire carrier then trying to store water or fuel where the old spare used to be. That extra 2 grand of equipment and extra weight is sure worth an extra 1/4-1/2" of clearance.
Plenty of stock tire retention systems work in ways that deform the tire straight from the factory. I would not worry about it.
I have mine strapped in as a backup for the cable. The cables are notorious for breaking and dropping the spare... I know this for a fact as I found my spare laying in the middle of the highway with the factory retainer under it.
