Real time Vacuum Pump 97 7.3 Powerstroke

The Vacuum pump got a lot noisier on the way home... It looked new when I bought the rig a little over a year ago... That said, it still does. When I disconnect the line it gets even noisyier. Plugging the line doesn't make it stop. Covering the outlet makes it quieter.

Thoughts... I'm thinking it's terminal.

Opinions on reman?

Anyone ordered one from Accurate Deisel?

Thanks in advance.

Mine went out after 220K on my 97. I was going down a big grade out of Lake Shasta. It was not a fun experience when loaded with my camper and gear. You will be standing on the brake pedal with two feet when it goes out. I put a reman on at the first parts store parking lot I could find. It has been fine for 5K miles. I'm considering keeping a spare with me for big trips. It takes about 30 minutes to change out. I would change it out ASAP if it is making a strange noise.

I've got an alternate vehicle so I'm planning to avoid driving it till I've swapped it out.

I can get a reman one locally for about the same price as a new one from Accurate Diesel (with shipping & exchange). I'd go new, but it'll essentially have no Warranty vs the Reman one which will likely have a year (but I didn't ask).

I went thru a few remans before buying new.

I wont bother with remans anymore, even with how easy it is to swap them out.
The remans simply dont seem to last.

Be sure to check your brake booster as well.when I replaced my vaccum pump, I burned up a second one , after 5k, due to insufficient pressure from booster.

Check your nearest Oreilys Autoparts store. I believe they sell the Cardone vac pump for the 7.3 AND it comes with a lifetime warranty and the pulley is already installed. I thought mine was making noise and it turned out to be the belt. I swapped the cardone in for the pre-existing one and now I have a spare. About 10k on the cardone pump and no issues thus far.

None this side of the border unfortunately. I'll check NAPA, but so far I'm leaning towards the new one... But I've got a couple other places to check.

I've got a newer booster sitting on a shelf... And I know it's not belt noise, it goes away when it's intake is covered.

John at Quadvan told me they don't reman these. I just did my second one in 40k miles. Makes me wonder. I used cardone in the last one.

I've ordered a new one from an EBay seller. 10 year Warranty, 300,000+ feedback in the last 12 months, 99.9% positive feedback, selling since 2004. I'll post pictures when it arrives. It was $95 us shipped vs $220 for a reman with a 1 yr warranty.

Different one... I've reversed the lines on that one to inflate kids toys etc.

I'm talking about the brake vacuum pump needed on diesels with power brakes.

Pump arrived today. It's a new Dorman pump. I'll report how the install goes. One downside is this one didn't come with a pulley installed :( so I'll have to remove the old one and use a bolt & nut to install it on the new pump. I'm hoping it's not too big a pain in the *****, and I've got a puller that'll remove it. I've got a mechanic friend down the street or the loan a tool program at the local parts store if all else fails.
