Hello Folks:

Just a brand newbie to the forum and the site,, thanks for having me... coming in from Alberta, Canada ( ya I know, cold all the time ), lots of area to tear around in though,,, just wondering if anybody had any ideas regarding what type of mechanical locker would work well in the back of my landcruiser,, primarily on road/trails/mud holes, most of the time , but looking for something that will do it all ( perhaps ) , any feedback would be greatly appreciated... '85 BJ73 3B diesel landcruiser.....

Options are as follows (costs are highest with top options):

1. IF you have a full float rear axle then you can use an OEM cable locker (assuming you can find one). Switchable. Probably $2000+ per axle

2. ARB air locker. Switchable. About $1000 per axle

3. Aussie locker (for us poor folks). Non-switchable. About $250 per axle

The Aussie locker is always engaged while the others are not making the others have a better road manners than the Aussie.

Where in AB are you from?

Drop a note over to Jan (CanuckMariner) he has a similar truck and would be able to provide some specific insight. Some good options on cable actuated mechanical lockers...

The ARB air locker is my favorite. It is strong and simple. You can also cut out the electro-pnuematic system and run a full pneumatics system from the compressor to the locker. This eliminates much of the wiring and more importantly the solenoids which are just extra failure points.

For a more cost effective, automatic locker, the Aussie lockers have proven to be a quality product, and at $200 they are a good deal. I have a couple friends who run these in their Toyotas and they work well both on and off road. I believe the work better than the lock-rite lockers.

Good luck - I think the aussie locker is a good product, especially for the money, compared to the other lockers out there similiarly priced.

On-road, after they get broken in, you will hear them ratchet, but they dont kick or jerk some other auto-lockers.
Off-road, they work very well, unlocking and locking when the terrain changes and seem to hold up under abuse very well.

yes i am going to order as soon as I find out if they can ship directly to South Africa

one thing that gets me confused though...they only list one single model on their website for ALL LandCruiser from 1969 to 1997...there is no distinction between the various flavors...

does that make sense?

Christian,

Before you buy a locker, talk to Dan at 4WheelAuto.com in Edmonton AB and possibly Bruce (Lowenbrau on the forum). Probably worth the discussion first...
