Rear tire carrier bumpers? Love em Hate em?

Backwoods Rambler,

Very cool design........You will get a lot shake if you don't install a rubber stop that touches the rear door. This rubber stop will touch right before the door latches and give pre-load to the pilot points, thus eliminating all slop from the pilot points.

You will have to be strong to lift the tail gate with that extra weight on it.

Thanks and yes, I have an adjustable rubber stop in the works :costumed-smiley-007

I don't see why it wouldn't work, though your door would need to have adequate support (interior support, most likely welded on the inside of the door skin). You'll be putting your pneumatic struts through a literal hell and may need to be upgraded. I see the weight will be placed on the door and the roof with an almost 50/50 sort of split. This mod would greatly depend on the final tire size intended.

Aaron

Good observations. :)

Reinforcing the hatch is also in the works, and I will be running dual struts to handle and distribute, the added weight with reinforced mounting points as well.

Final tire size is 33x10.5x15.

Here's a few of my homemade one. This is definitely the best setup for me. I've tried it on the roof, under the truck, in the truck. Just way better on a swingout in so many ways. Yes you have to open it to get in the back of the truck but who cares? I used a double shear trailer spindle for the hinge and a 2500lb latch from Carr-Lane. No rattles and very solid. Oh and since you asked about security, I just used a cable lock for a bicycle through the wheel and carrier. So far so good.

For me having it in the backdoor is great, I can get to it if I am stuck in the mud or along the road. When I had my blowout on the highway, me and friend change the tire in less then 7 minutes.

My Rover is tall, adding a tire to the roof would only make it more top heavy.

I was gung ho, well not so gung ho as the funds have all but stopped coming in. So I was thinking about a bumper with RTC and leaning toward 4x4Labs, yes they are pricey but they look the best when shopping for one similar to Slee, ARB, TJM, Kaymar and others. Something else is currently in the works and while the bumper currently has no provisions for a swing-out I plan on changing that once in my possession.

84-96 REAR F-150 tanks are the tanks you need. The 91 and up have a high pressure in-tank pump. 87-90 have an oddball low pressure in tank pump that feeds a frame mounted high pressure pump.

They are 18 gal, and Autozone website gives measurements on this tank.

I'm currently waiting to replace my Bronco tank with one to gain 6" of clearance vs the standard 33 gallon Bronco tank.

I love mine. It is somewhat of a pain to get into the rear hatch, but I'm not in there very much. Much better than having the spare on the roof for me...

First photo looks fake...I broke out the fisheye for this occasion, don't get to use it very much. :wings:

I should have quoted this......
If I'm not mistaken a ford F150 tank will fit into that spot with little trouble. I don't remember what year, but certain it's an older one. I believe its a 16gal. as well. Also I remeber being able to pick them up from summit racing.

Somehow I missed that the thread was two pages long already. I thought I was posting right below the above.

Love it. From the ground to the bottom of the bumper - 28 inches. Room for that auxiliary fuel tank now...

Here's a few pic's of the Proto Fab bumper on the back of my Early Bronco. Proto Fab has a great cam lock style latching system that works great. Here's a link to their site if you want some more pic's of the latch.

Double swing out tube bumper made by CBI (Idaho Falls):
1) Relieve the weight of the spare on the door hinges
2) Rear Quarter panel protection
3) Scepter can carrier
4) High lift mount

Mostly a thumbs up! The only thing I wish was different about mine (and most I've seen) would be having it mounted on the drivers side vs. the passengers side. I look over my shoulder when backing up and having the tire blocking a bit of the view is sometimes a pain. I've been told by more than one person the bafooneristic reasoning for having it on the passengers side is so when parallel parking in town the tire wont swing into traffic. Right. For one thing, I back up every single day. I can't remember the last time I was in town much less parallel parked. The tire does not swing out that far anyway. So, for whatever reason people put stickers and tires (I did it too re: tire - but not by choice) on their car blocking the rear view. If you have a choice, you may want to consider this.

The utility of having it on the back is truly there - it takes an extra ten seconds to get in the back, but having the tire easy to reach and handle plus the extra clearance under the rig sure make a nice combo. No squeaks with my Kaymar either.

I'm contemplating putting mine on the drivers side for that very reason. I need to see when backing the boat.

FWIW a couple neat features I'm going to build into mine. A ladder that is part of the carrier for easier access to the rack up top, and the hinge is a Dana 44 stub shaft, spindle and hub. This way you can use the locking hub as a lock to hold the tire carrier open or closed or anywhere in between. Plus the 44 spindle/hub is much more heavy duty than about all the other options.

I like mine. Designed it specificly for use with the Chaser behind me. When I tow the trailer I couldn't open the swing arm because it was to long and would hit the trailer nose box. Solved that with a double swing.

As for seeing out the rear window, well I gave up on that once I gained my rear passenger

He tends to block most of my view anyway. I haven't used the center mirror or turned around around to back up since I learned to drive. I always use the side mirrors.

I have a backup camera which will need relocation to the rear spoiler wing on my 4Runner, and that will aid in the back up but for now I will keep the spare underneath. I do like the swing out ideas I've seen as I will have to exterior mount my swing because the bumper isn't deep enough to mount the spindle or swing on top.
