Rear Tire Carrier/Swing out, Input wanted.

Im in the process planning my tire carrier. It will be a somewhat short term thing untill i can get a real rear bumper built.

That being said im trying to keep the costs down and will be using a trailer spindle. (rockstomper, AtoZ, 4x4 labs style)

Where in running into problems is the latch, i like the red handled ones from Mcmaster but they are spendy and not secure if the spindle does break. (planning for the worst case), so has anyone used a bolt with a T-Handle? seems like it might be a pain in the butt to use. anyone have an experience with one? i like it because if the spindle breaks the bold should hold the swing out on so it doesnt go flying off behind me.

the other problem is the bolt/latch isnt attatched, so it may get "misplaced"

Next, i like Willmans design with rubber pads under the swing arm that gets clamped down onto with the latch, but this is more of a pain with a T-Handle bolt type latch. any idea? is it worth the trouble to try to spread the load accross the bumper?

any other secure latch ideas?

I'm planning on using a "paddle latch" from a truck/trailer supply store as a convenience latch. (easy to use). But I'm probably also going to have a bolt or pin for use as a backup on trips, off-road, etc. I think it's a good idea for the reasons you stated.

That's probably one of the better solutions I've seen, although it would be annoying to have to pull the pin out every time you open it. And then lose the pin and the handle in the snow. But at least it would never rattle!

Hah! Used one of those back in '01 If you look carefully you can it with a locking pin that I added as a 'just in case':

I can tell you from experience that it did not like that location. Grit will bind it up and then you can't get it loose. Might be OK on a rear bumper, but I'll not be using another one for anything on a vehicle.

i am using the t handle that atoz sells. I like the KISS aspect. 'pain in the butt' is a relative term, i really like mine. Gives me good piece of mind and does not rattle. i've tested every other latch i've seen on people rigs and they all have a little play, the t- bolt if done properly has none. the only downside i can say is that once open you have to be careful not to drop the handle in mud or snow

good to hear you like it! im thinking a well placed magnet might keep me from losing the handle

Better is if can't come out of the hole, but can spin in the hole. A circlip can do that if there is a groove for it to fit into. Optionally if the T handle has a shoulder on it then you can make a clip that fits on the backside up close to the back of the shoulder to retain the pin.
