Rear winch?

Scott,
Where are you wheeling? southwest/west?

8K winch is fine man. Its a great compromise of cost/weight/pulling power/ reliability. You already own it and just need to do a little fab.

If you want a rear winch, just do it and don't think about it any more. You can webwheel your way into a lot of trouble and expense. I would be totally happy w/ the 8K knowing I would be spending some extra for syn line.

If you're really sweating it, just fab it w/ enough clearance for a 12K. You can always swap later if need be but I will bet you never will.

Yes, my LC80 does regularly punch up to the GVWR; I am appalled at the resale value of used winches :( I'd still have to spend another pretty penny to get to a 12k.

Maybe I should ditch my acquisition of PTO parts for the Troopy and put the 8k there?

I like plan "A". The 8000 will be fine, especially if you keep a snatch-block handy.

I might be able to help with the PTO project, what t-case do you have?

You could always use the front mounted winch with a couple of snatch blocks and winch yourself backwards! Once you have done it once you will sell the 8000 winch and buy something else for your truck!

Insert the perfect application for the Hickey Sidewinder winch. Reather than spooling on a horizontal drum with a rather small diameter, the Sidewinder rollse on a vertical axis on a much larger sppol. Because of this you only need to have a small fairlead in fact a small hawse setup is even applicable. They would be the perfect rear winch application... if they still made them.

I have a NIB Hickey I've kept around for some distant project, potentially in a rear application?? I've seen a few welll tailored rear winch setups, mostly in older Land Cruiser applications. For me its less of a need as I'm rarely on the trail solo and the majority of those I travel with also have winches. For those rare times I have a linear hand winch. Thats not to say others have absolute needs for a rear winch and am interested to see how you guys handle the mounting and such.

I've done it. But it also requires 2 additional anchor points and a boat-load of wire. Mostly in the desert SW &| tree-line+, these anchor points are few and far between.
