Reasonable vehicle to tow.....yr choice.

I am looking for an expo type vehicle (4x4) to tow behind the Van/Sportsmobile to use for exploring the local area where ever we end up.

I seem to be stuck on a jeep.

Normally it’s a two horse trailer. Now I'm looking for a bit more power and a little less feeding, cleaning, and nightly care.

What would you recommend for about 10 to 12K or less???

Consider a little Suzuki Samurai. Cheap, easy to fix and a little goat off-road with the right equipment and driver. Extra bonus is it's super light.

This is what I would do! I'm even considering doing it behind my 4Runner.

....possibly a Rhino or other 4x4 UTV on a trailer? This seems like it would be the most cost effective small solution if you aren't concerned with street legality.

actually, those side-by-sides cost more than Suzuki Samurais; both vehicles have roughly the same dimensions (wheelbase, track width, etc.) but the Sammy has solid axles front/rear and a much cheaper/wider/expansive aftermarket.

"streetable" to boot! All it takes is a forest ranger or fish/game officer with a hard-on to stroke you blue for driving an unlicensed vehicle on a public road (even some forest roads). In some jurisdictions you can be arrested and vehicle confiscated!

Don't want to seem disagreeable but I'd rather spend the $$ on upgrading the SM so it can get there itself and you can spend the night in back of beyond. Like F/R locking diffs, 35-37" tires, gearing to compensate, suspension to suit tires, winch(es), air compressor for front ARB and tires.
You'd have a vehicle that could get to 95% of the spots a Jeep could. Towing will very radically reduce your mobility.
With labor and high quality stuff that would use up $10-12K. Maybe with enough left for 2 bicycles.

Charlie Not to brag or anything. It's done; the SMB has everything you mentioned including a Paratrooper and Swiss bike. I agreed with you when I had it built 3 yrs ago.

Alright not exactly.... I'm running with 33's, 35's would be nice.

You are right though everything you suggested is what makes it a great expedition rig and believe me we use it that way.

I was instead just looking for something for the times we just want to get to a single destination set up a base camp with the SMB and be able to go out each day to explore without having to tear down and set up. I call it a lazy camping trip.

Sportsmobiles are great for continuous movement with very light setup at the end of the day right where you decide to stop. However as with towing a horse trailer there are the times we want to "Camp" for a week or less not far from home and then explore on foot or horseback each day. My thought is to replace horse with a jeep, sammy, or some of the other suggestions board members have been kind enough to share.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions keep um coming.....HMMM! a sammy is really making me think...but then again so does TJ and series III 88...

Thanks guys! Please don’t stop suggesting.

I am most comfortable thinking jeep ....but then again, some of the others seem a smarter option. hmmmmm! Where could I get an 88 or sammy and parts and how to work on them?? hmmmm !!

I think maybe this forum is a BAD ...GOOD thing :snorkel: heh!

:coffeedrink: I'm still reading.
