Haha, apparently no one here pays any attention to newb posts but I am a long time lurker here and only want to post on things I have first hand experience with. You will not be disappointed with the Spot, it is a great lamp and one of the best sellers at the notorious gear shop I am employed by...

The best headlamp I have ever owned...

exceptionally light, especially w/Lion batteries
just the right amount of light for a headlamp
stashes anywhere, I carry it with me while working even.

and the newer version w/built in LED...

I own both of those. I like the compact size and the versatility of the strap. I use it a lot on my wrist to direct light right at what I'm working on. Plus easily wraps around the grab handles in the back of my truck for over head light when sleeping in the back of my truck.

My primary camping headlamp is a cheap energizer one from Wally World.. Costs less than $15 and I love it. Takes AAA batteries and lasts forever. It has 3 white light and one red light setting. I have been very satisfied. I have another cheepie I found while camping that stays in my tool box at home that I use for working on the truck.

I can see dropping a little more cash on a handheld but for my purposes the Energizer is plenty.

Petzl E-Lite

If you want something that is super compact and light, yet powerful enough to do everything but breaking trail, the e-lite by petzl is great. I have two of these (one in the jeep, and one in the house). I always know where they are, and have lasted almost two years on the stock batteries.

i use the Petzl Myo XP. it's not cheap, and it's not lightweight, but it is pretty damn bright. it has 3 brightness levels and a flashing mode, plus a "super bright" mode that you can only use by holding down this little button. it also has the diffuser lens to let you switch from spot beam to flood beam.

fwiw, i have tried about a dozen different headlamps, from the super lightweights to the heavyweights (like the Myo XP), and i still favor the Myo XP.

I use this one as well. In fact, it has done so well, I bought Grace one too, because she was always using it for middle of the night bio breaks. We also have an e-lite, which is good as a backup, or when you are "pretty sure you won't need a headlamp but might want to stick one in the pack...."
