Recommendations for a H.O. alternator

Give these guys a call:

Boyle Future Technology
12325 Locksley Ln
Auburn, CA 95602
530-888-6290

They will take a stock Tacoma alternator, and rebuild it to put out something like 160 amps. A stock Tacoma alternator puts out 70 amps. Everyone that I know, that has sent their alternator to Boyle's has been extremely satisfied, and I've never heard of a Boyle's alternator failing, yet.

You can either send them yours, or buy a used stock alternator, and send that one to them. Their turn-around time is about 6 days. Costs about $100 bucks for the upgrade.

Call Alterstart here in Dallas. I was not able to find their alternator for the 3.4 online, but they have them, and I have one on my truck. You NEED to put 4guage or larger charge wire on with these alternators. If you do not, it will fry your 8 guage stock charge wire. Give them a call, and they can supply you with the correct alternator.

Jamie,

Does Boyle Future Tech do only Toyota or will they do any alternater (I have an Isuzu NPR). Mine is only an 80 amp where the newer ones are 110.
Thanks,

Vic

I'm not sure. I think they'll do ANY alternator, but I only know Toyota guys that have used their service.

Give 'em a call and ask them.

Alternator rebuild shops should be able to build up any alternator - within limits (the size of the outer case is a limit). It requires adding more windings to the rotor/stator....and like a bigger alternator, requires more engine HP to turn.

You may also want to look to a larger OE Toyota alternator. I found a 130 or 150 amp 1st gen Tundra alternator would almost bolt in to the 93 - 97 Land Cruiser. It required a small bracket and a plug change, both simple and cheap. Reliabilty of the OEM Denso stuff is awesome, and replacements can be had anywhere. With that said, I don't know if anything exists that will fit your engine but it could be worth looking.

What my local 20+ years in the business starter/generator/alternator guy told me when I asked him about more amps:
Going to a bigger case when possible is a good call. More amps generates more heat. With more heat inside a small alternator case reliability goes down. If you can't go to a bigger case, then be reasonable in your amp demands. The closer that you are to stock, the longer the alt will live.
