Recovery point advise on a D2

Have a 00 DII with the factory front bumper trimmed, the problem is no $$ for a real bumper with recovery points, so I can either find another factory loop as I was given one. Or, here's the yes or no advise question, it at one time had the factory brush guard, it still has the brackets in which the factory brush guard was attached, do you think these would be strong enough to bolt on some left over jeep tow hooks and would work in a pinch? Thoughts, comments or questions? Thanks

You mentioned Jeep hooks in a Land Rover forum. Duck for cover.

I think your best option is the JATE rings.

My truck has a steel tow loop thing bolted to the frame. I've used it for recovery a few times, and it hasn't killed anybody yet. But then I was being yanked on by a non-kinetic-recovery tow strap by a Jeep using a hook so... Maybe all the negatives canceled eachother out. YMMV

the dangerous part is being jerked by a Jeep... :victory:
get one of the military D ring frame mounted recovery points and be safe. Same for the rear, or as stated above, a D ring via the hitch receiver.

Nope

What is that a picture of? It looks like the brush guard has been cut off and the what I would assume was supposed the be the shackle points from it left on. I did hesitate saying Jeep hooks in the land rover forum, but we're all adults here aren't we. :D Trust me not the ideal scenario but a slight possibility.

That's a head on shot showing what you asked could work, not working. The bracket bent to the left after one practice pull. Not effective at all. Use the factory recovery eye (debatable), not the tow loop, for emergency pulls until you can get Jates or a bumper. Whether or not you'd use a Jeep hook is irrelevant. That bracket has no structural integrity and I would not trust it one bit in a recovery situation.

Not sure of your budget but here are some options:

150$ish. Get a winch tray for use with stock bumper called a hidden winch mount or something. You can throw a winch on it as well as a solid recovery point like a dixon-bate.
300ish scour craigslist. There have been a few ARBs go for 450 in my area with winches and a few non winch bottorfs have traded hands in the 200$ range. Both have good recovery points and are steel bumpers.
$50-100 a homebrew bumper if your fab skills allow.
$60 there was a guy soling two used LR Jate rings on another forum.
I know you can get two new for $100ish, let me find the link for you...

You could buy a "cluster hook assembly" that you can hook onto your frame. Don't use jeep hooks, the strap or chain would slip off. If you have a rear hitch you could attach a "d" shackle.

Please don't do this. Those cluster hooks are not designed for recovery.

See here for examples where AWDirect clearly states that these are not designed for recovery: http://www.awdirect.com/grade-70-t-...ter-w-connecting-link-grab-hook-11-7gh/hooks/
