Haven't posted anything at all in a good while, but thought I'd have go because I got a new truck and am in the process of outfitting it bit for some adventuring.

Short story made long:

Back in `14, I went from a built `02 supercharged Xterra to a full-size truck (2014 Tundra CC). The family had outgrown the Xterra and loaded down, pulling our Conqueror Compact it was getting worked pretty hard a lot of the time so we thought that we'd sell the Xterra and trailer, build the Tundra and get FWC pop-up.

However, when push came to shove, and we'd taken several serious looks at campers we decided that just wasn't for us. Plus we just couldn't part with the Conqueror trailer. We've had some many great adventures with it that it's become part of the family. And, it's a just a little different, like us! So I put a cap on the Tundra instead and we kept the trailer.

3 years of owning the Tundra netted the realization that it was just too much truck for most of the places we like to go, so I started looking at downsizing to smaller rig that was more in line with our needs. the Tundra was a towing machine and yanked the little Compact around that I was more concerned about hurting the trailer rather than the truck, but it was just overkill. And we missed going places that a smaller rig could have fit, but the Tundra was simply too large to go there.

My initial thought was to get a Tacoma, but one thing led to another and I test drove a couple of standard Colorados with both the gas and diesel engines and discovered that I liked the truck better than the Tacoma. This was about the time info on the ZR2 started trickling out and once some concrete info was available, I decided that based on my impressions of the standard truck and how good the ZR2 looked on paper, the ZR2 was my truck, sold the Tundra and placed an order for a ZR2 Crew Cab, short bed with the gas engine and the contingency that if the truck didn't live up to expectations, that it would be a no-sale and I'd fall back on the Tacoma. My order was placed in March, before the trucks were actually scheduled for production and knew going in that there would be a fairly long wait.

Fast forward about 4 months and here it is! I have about 750 miles on the truck at this point and so far it's been everything I'd hoped for. The truck feels solid and well put together, it's very nice to drive, the power is good, the suspension is fantastic and having lockers at both ends nets a vehicle with capabilities beyond what I'm likely to need and it's sized just right for my needs. It's got more than enough towing capacity to handle the Compact quite nicely, so the towing "challenges" I faced with the Xterra should be non-existent.

Here's the truck as delivered:

Since I had roughly 4 months of down time between trucks, I had plenty of time to weigh out what I really wanted out of the truck and decided to go in a completely different direction this time. No caps or campery-type things this time. I wanted to do something that had a little more utility/flexibility without busting the bank. I wanted to be able to lock stuff up in the bed and still have the utility of a truck on occasions when I needed it.

When the truck landed and we took delivery, I got busy ordering up the goods:

Truck Covers USA American - Roll Cover with rack tracks

FrontRunner Slimline II rack
FrontRunner Gerry can holder
FrontRunner Hi-Lift brackets
FrontRunner Shovel mount
FrontRunner Tie down rings

Yamika Q/R track mount towers
Yakima cross bars

BedRug

I already had the Yakima stuff and figured I'd use the Q/R feature of the towers to make the entire rack assembly a Q/R setup so I can pull it off the truck and retract the cover when I need a truck.

Anyways, I had time this morning to dig into one stack of boxes and get started by installing the cover and bed rug.

I had no prior experience with this type of cover and it took me quite a while to make a decision on which one I wanted. All of the hard retractable covers are expensive and this is the single most expensive piece of my puzzle, burning up about half my budget on this one component. I chose this cover because it's all steel and aluminum construction aside from a very few plastic parts such as slide/guide blocks and the lock cover. The retractable portion of the cover is made from powder coated, interlocking aluminum slats, no plastic "hinges" or vinyl covering and has plastic sliders that ride in the side rails. This is a great location to apply some KISS, no bearings to maintain, jam up with dirt, get blow full of dirt by pressure washers, etc.. It's no more complicated than it needs to be. Outstanding!

The canister is quite compact, roughly 8"x8" and made from power coated steel as are the side rails. These parts are also very well made and no more complicated than they need to be. Everything fit together properly with no issues whatsoever. The rack tracks are nice and straight and well mounted. Construction is really solid and has a quality feel to it.

Install took me about 3hrs and I took my time. The canister just drops right into place, but there is a bit of set-up involved with the side rails. Once attached to the canister, they must be shimmed at the bed rail to get the right spacing at the tailgate. It's a simple process but does require a bit of patience and I spent about half the install time on that step. Once shimmed correctly, the cover is held in place at six points along the bed rail by special made clamps. When everything is cinched up, it's pretty solid and it doesn't take a lot of torque on the clamps to get there.

Since I had the Bed Rug, I just popped that in first and had a nice carpeted work surface while I installed the cover. The Bed rug did make the fit of the cover a bit tight since it goes all the way up the front bed wall and pushes the cover canister back about 5mm. This resulted in the side rails *just* clearing the tailgate with about 2~3mm left to spare. I could have cut the Bed Rug down a bit, but there shouldn't be any issues how it is and the carpet adds an additional seal between the front of the bed and the cover canister. As a precaution to prevent the tailgate from banging into the end of the rail, I used a bit of heavy-duty closed cell weather striping as a bumper on the end of each rail. The snug fit should also prevent any potential "walking" of the cover rails in rough going.

The cover has drains built in to it to channel any water away from the interior of the bed. A nice thing about the Colorado bed is that it's got several pre-made holes for Chevy's Gear-On stuff that I'm not using so I don't need to do any drilling for the drain hoses, I can run them right to an existing hole. I didn't get to that today but should have it squared away in a day or two and adding some weatherstripping to the sides of the tailgate.

Overall, the cover fits really nice and looks to be worth what it cost. It's definitely more secure than the cap I had on the Tundra and can be opened incrementally with the tailgate up or down as well. I can't wait the get the rest of the system put together so we can hook up the trailer and go try it all out.

I feel that lockers are the main thing I would like GM to have done differently with my 15 z71 . enjoy your new rig!!

Thanks guys! It's pretty awesome so far and was worth the wait to get it.

I'm really happy with the drivetrain. The trans shifts well, feels tight and seems to work really well with the LGZ engine in this truck.

I'm and old-school hot-rod guy and was concerned that going from the 5.7 V8 in the Tundra down to a "measly" 3.6 in the Colorado would be serious downgrade but it's pretty stout. This engine backed with the new 8 speed works really well and actually feels faster/livelier than the Tundra did. It's a lot more fun to drive as well.

The lockers + factory installed good stuff suspension were really big deals for me along with the rear disc brakes. GM did their homework on this one. Just the right size, good power, REAL performance suspension... I do believe they built exactly the truck I wanted.

A few bolt-ons and I should be good to go.

With a name like Red 5 you ought to have one of those remote-control roof spotlights painted up like R2D2's dome.

The new Colorado looks great! I've put tens of thousands of miles in several of the previous generation of Colorado's. Under powered, but reliable.

Got the FrontRunner Slimline II rack assembled and installed today along with single jerry can and Hi-Lift mounts.

The rack was went together really easy. The only trouble I had was with one corner that needed some love from a dead blow hammer to fully seat so the retaining screw would thread in clean.
I mounted the rack to the cross bars using some Yakima "SNAR"s that I scrounged up in the garage. I used 3 per cross bar and it's really solid. Bonus with these towers is that I can take the entire rack off the truck in about a minute with one helper if I need to.

I've also got a shovel mount that I haven't installed yet and I've got to get my choppin' stick mounted up as well.

The rest of the rack space will be used for a table, our USGI issue rocket box trash can and a couple of weatherproof bins. I have a bunch of "portable" tie-down rings for the rack that I can move around to secure things as needed.

Once the wallet recovers from this stuff, I'll get a set of recovery boards, a good hand winch then I'll figure out some additional LED trail lighting.

In the meantime, I've got a GM cat-back performance exhaust, additional LED bed lighting and LED interior lighting to install. I also want to move the spare from under the truck and into the bed once I come up with a good way to secure it.

I've got some maintenance to do on the Conqueror trailer over the weekend, so I've gotten about as much done on the truck as I can for right now.
