Remote starter, looking for RPM wire...

Anyone else installed a remote starter in their van? I need to find the RPM sensor wire. Google says it's a white wire with red (pink) strip coming from the firewall but this might be for the F serie? My remote starter is by CrimeStopper, works great to unlock all my doors and start the truck in mild weather but to get the most of it I need to hook the RPM wire so that it cranks in cold weather till the truck starts (has pre-programmed max crank time option as well for safety).

Any help would be appreciated!

And for those who have remote start, you probably live in colder climate? Do you use something to block the cold air coming through the radiator (cardboard, bra...)? When the temperature drops here it takes for ever to reach full coolant temp!

Hey David, could you use the oil pressure sensor?
It would crank till it’s running... but would it be too long? Or not work with the starter?

Bet if you plugged in the block heater it wouldn’t be an issue (not the solution you’re looking for). I found the heater starts working way faster also.

Works great with the block heater but I'm looking to get it to work when I'm not plugged in. I'm not sure about the oil pressure sensor, I was just going with what they suggested in the install instruction.

Fair enough. I’d start there also. RPM input from a diesel seems harder to find than on a gasser.

Put a 7.3 truck dash in and tied into the firewall wire you mentioned, next to the brake booster. Works fine, should be the same on yours.

That's interesting, you managed to swap in a truck dash?!? Never seen it done before, you got me curious! Might be the same wire, it was in the large bundle just to the left of the brake pedal but when I tested it I didn't get any readings. So might be user error if yours worked out... Thanks!

Well you leave us guessing at what year/make/model you are working on. Taking a guess from the other comments that this is a Ford?

Ford publishes a very nice guide for this stuff. Go to the Ford website and look up the body builder's guide for your year. For typically has a tach signal wire available for customers to tie into. If you can't find it right away, look at the PTO options.

It's a 98, also put the ambulance pack in it that was a direct plug in. I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure the wiring is the same for all mid 90s through 04. To clarify on the dash it is not a direct plug in but also not hard to rewire the plugs to make it all work.

There's a rpm wire from the ECU but the the one in the engine bay next to the brake booster is very easy to get to. The ambulance or idle control harness is on the inside next to the parking brake, never tested the wires but just plugged in the control box and it all worked fine. The 7.3 also has all the wires for cruse control, I believe the gas models are not drive by wire and need more parts.

The dash and especially the bottom panel under the steering look really sharp! Time to go dig again for that wire...

ive done the gauge cluster swap as well. i have pinout diagrams from my 03 7.3 van and the (iirc, an 01) f250 pu the cluster came from, but photobucket has my digital versions on lock down. i went back and looked at them and my notes make no sense to me now, and none of the van diagrams show the rpm signal. so im not sure where i found that info, but my tach does work. only thing that doesnt work is the cc light. there was 2 choices and my first choice was wrong and just havent had a chance to fix it yet. im also hoping that the 2nd wire that comes up from my transfer case is the low gear light that i can hook up as well.

im currently looking for my hard copies of those diagrams in hopes that there is some method to how the hell i did this swap and maybe some info regarding the actual rpm lead. ill post them up if i can track them down or maybe screen shot from photobucket if you think it would help. ill post links to them either way maybe you can view them there??
