Remove the rear view mirror?

The rear view mirror in my 05 Tacoma is a huge wart that blocks a lot of beautiful views. When I tow, the mirror is useless as it is when I have a lot of gear in the bed. I was thinking about using a small convex style mirror in its place. There are no lights or info displayed in the mirror. What do you think?

Is there any legal ramifications for removing the rear view mirror? I've seen vehicles that have totally no view what-so-ever and they still come with rear view mirrors new. I figured it had to be some DOT/Big Brother wathcing over us thing. :)

In Utah, you are required to have the drivers side door mirror, you have the option of either the rear view mirror OR a passenger door mirror, but you do not have to have both. Other states will vary I suspect...

I think each state has different laws. Similar to Scott's my display also acts as a rearview mirror. Thus making it compliant.

That's a pretty standard law that states driver side and either passenger or inside depending on vehicle. Inside mirror is not required because there is plenty of vehicles that they would be pointless (think box truck).

I have a Wink in my Suburban mostly for the extra side view when towing. I can see out of the passengerside window with it. Seeing directly out the back for any distance is near impossible because of the 2nd AC and the shape of the truck.
