Replacement air filtration system

Has anyone had experience with replacing the OEM AIR INTAKE AND FILTER CANISTER on my FG649 crew cab. I AM CONSIDERING THIS AS I AM CONCERNED THAT THE OEM CANISTER MAKE BE A PROBLEM WHEN DEEP FORDING. MY PLAN WAS TO FIT A NEW CANISTER (perhaps a Donaldson type) much higher up on the back of the cab, about rear window height, air ram on top and repipe to the engine intake.

in 5 years of deep water crossings on Cape York, i've not had any trouble with the standard set up. The donaldsons are noisy, not something we wanted on our trucks, we had donaldsons on the 639's on Fraser. Worked well, but noisy...

Heard you dropped in up at the Accessories workshop last week.

A couple of issues with moving the OEM unit up behind the cab. The length of the tract is one especially on a crewcab, then there is the issue of removing the OEM snorkel complete with silencer and water trap.

I have seen engines destroyed when guys have plumbed homemade snorkels into relocated OEM air cleaners and water has prematurely destroyed the paper elements and ...well you can guess the rest. I've also seen turbos destroyed by rust flakes from metal air cleaners so if you are planning to do this yourself then only ever use plastic air cleaners, stainless piping, proper turbo hose and hose bends. Turbo hose clamps are nice too but far more important in the tract between the turbo and engine where there is positive pressure. Fleetguard and Donaldson both make great aftermarket air cleaners ...not too expensive and easy to get replacement filter elements for.

This is not a recommendation to do it ....my post is only just to let you know some of the issues........Engineer has probably crossed more creeks in a Canter than I've had hot dinners so please take his comments on board....by the way, we stopped doing that sort of work years ago but I have seen some guys mount them out on the front bullbar on crewcabs ( and no worry about the cab tilting too) . At least that keeps the tract short if you mount it out there.

I will steer away from any major changes to the OEM air intake system. What is the forums thoughts on fitting an air ram. Seems to give benefit on most other vehicles

mate i had pretty much the stock air intake system on my old fg649 crewcab, did some quite deep rivers (around 4ft) with no drama at all. the top pipe in the snorkel has a twirly vortex kinda thingy (thats the technical term for it) that i pulled out, also replaced the head with a ram head that stuck above the cab. no dramas with that either. dont know if it had any huge effect (probly not), but seems like a good idea.
also the ram head is advertised as throwing the water out as you drive into it at speed, being heavier than air its meant to fly to the back of the 'throat' and out underneath the clamp. in theory anyways...
my new fg84 crewcab i have replaced the whole lot with 4" aluminium pipe and a donaldson, primarily because i replaced the main tank with a 210L one, that runs right up to the back of the cab. also the stock setup wont support enough airflow for what i want to do with the turbo...

On my NPS300 I used 100mm Stainless exhaust pipe when I modified the air intake

almost related. Had to do a quick fix with duct tape and a couple of used lemonade bottles - below the twirly thing in the top of the air intake is a circular drain to let the water out that the twirly thing throws in. The whole drain was blocked with dust and the wall corroded through leaving everything above dangling.
