Resurrecting A One Owner Disco 1- A LR love story

I planned to hike today, but it’s been pissing down with rain. Also out of books to read, I truly have nothing to do. So I figured making an old school forum post would kill time!

I’ve had a lifelong attraction to Land Rovers. During childhood, my family traveled constantly. Which meant if we passed a LR dealer, I made my family stop. This was back in the 90s, and very early 2000s when most of the dealers had off road demo courses on site. Vehicles parked on rocks, and the interiors looked like a bass pro shop. A wonderful time! Throughout this time period, I tried persuading my parents to purchase a Disco but they were too small for our family.65BE245F-64CD-4EB2-ADD7-C8A2F1F389F5.jpeg

When I was 17, one of my friends purchased a lightly used Disco 2 that was still under warranty. Which we took off road the day he got it. It saw jumps, slid down hills into trees, and blasted through shrubs. By the end of that day, it had a cracked windscreen, every panel was heavily scratched and dented, and the front bumper was nearly gone. Given he used the truck in such manner, it saw the dealer a bunch. The techs there would tell me to never buy a Land Rover product. This scared me into staying away from Discoveries.

In my early 20s, I had a few Disco 2 but that’s because I owned a dealership. I would only purchase one owner, low mileage examples and was petrified to touch them. I would buy them, and wouldn’t touch it unless someone was interested.

I did own a few l322 Range Rovers, and RRS during this time period. Which in hindsight is hilarious, given I was afraid to own a Disco 1 or 2.

Finally pulled the trigger on a UK import 300tdi Discovery during COVID. I bought it to travel cross country. It was supposed to be perfect, and not needing a thing. This was far from the truth. I put a lot of cash and time into making it road worthy. Shockingly, it traveled cross country and back!

After living out of this thing for over a month. Once we got back, it was parked and I didn’t want to even look at it! No AC, rough riding lifted suspension, etc will do that! I sold it, and ended up with an LR3 for my adventure mobile a year or so later.

This LR3 was a one owner truck. Optioned with the HD package, and dealer serviced its whole life. I did a few minor mechanical upgrades, tossed a RTT on it and enjoyed putting a ton of miles on it.

It started to acquire a bunch of scratches, dings, and interior tears from tossing dirtbike boots inside. I felt bad it went from a pampered life to the lifestyle I was subjecting it to. So I sold it!

Which brings things to the Disco I recently purchased. I wasn’t planning on buying one, but I crawl marketplace for more than one should and stumbled upon the ad. It was a one owner 1997 Discovery. The owner was selling due to not finding a shop to keep it going. He purchased it new in CA, and moved to NC in the mid 2000s. Bringing the Disco with him. It was dealer serviced, till they wouldn’t touch it. He then struggled to find a reliable shop over the years. So it sat. Sometime last year, he decided to try one last time to get it back on the road. He paid a shop a TON of cash to install a used low mileage engine, regasket it, along with new bearings, and other non engine related work. He had to bring it back several times for stuff, as it was never 100%. So it ended up sitting for another year till he decided to finally part ways.

When I bought it, the truck was in rough shape. None of the windows worked, the sunroofs leaked. LOTS of mold. The headliner was covered, along with almost every panel. The paint was toast, it leaked fluids, and ran poorly.

On a positive note, it came with every owners manual, receipt, VHS tapes, and literature Land Rover would send each year. Lots of cool stuff to sift through, for a nerd like myself. Not to mention, a factory optioned safety devices roof rack, brush and tail light guards.

Due to the mold, the interior was ripped out ASAP!

Every panel was pulled and cleaned. I decided to redo the headliner with a textured style bedliner paint.

The leaks were from a missing piece within one of the sunroofs.

Replaced the missing piece, took apart the sunroof trays to clean and reseal. Made sure the lines were cleared. They still would drip a small amount of water, so sealed both sunroofs with waterproof tape and called it a day!

The carpet was disgusting. It took a lot of work to restore.

The paint was destroyed. Deep water stains, the hood had heavy fading. Really poor shape.

This was my first time doing any sort of paint correction. Armed with roughly an hour of watching YouTube videos. I got to work attempting to restore the paint. It took way longer than I ever imagined. It was clay barred a few times, then cut and polished in multiple steps. I probably have 20+ hours into the paint. It’s far from perfect, but night and day from when I purchased it. The hood ended up getting one of the black out decals. Luckily that covered up all of the fade. The photo below is midway through correcting

The interior ended up getting sound deadening throughout. C01CF9B5-2C93-4AD2-AA32-D730C355D831.jpeg

Every panel was inside was taken out and cleaned. All speakers were replaced.

All the door seals were upgraded with Disco 2 units. Every window regulator and motor were changed. I tried finding good condition front seats, but struck out. All local upholstery shops were 2 months booked, and wanted $2,000+ to redo the seats. So I imported funky green britpart covers for the front and rear seats.

I redid the cooling system as these are a known weak point. Lower temp thermostat, new expansion tank, etc.

Regarding mechanicals. The oil pan gasket was replaced. Every fluid was changed. I redid various electrical and vacuum lines. New TPS, IAC, MAF, CPS. New fuel pump, etc.

I didn’t want the rough ride of a lifted Disco, so I decided to keep it factory height. I bought brand new stock coil springs, with KYB shocks. Had sway bar links replaced as well. 04BA2FEA-7058-4DCB-8218-F4247EE7BF3A.jpeg

It had 12 year old tires, so they were replaced with a slightly oversized all terrain.

I imported decals from the UK, that slightly resemble the factory optioned decals on the 3 door models.

I bought a RTT for it, and have been enjoying it for the last month or so. It’s been on a few adventures. While these trucks always need something, I’m not sure which direction to take it from here. I love the truck. It has tons of character, I always look back when I park it. But, these are slow going, and not the most comfortable. Debating possibly picking up an LR4, granted they don’t have that charm I just after. I’ll never park an lr3 or lr4 and look back at it. A disco 2 is on the table, which would get a bmw m54 engine swap… Undecided! For now, I’m going to enjoy this Disco 1!

Nice truck! These are a labor of love, that's for sure. I miss my D1 dearly, it doesn't have the vintage charm of my LR4 but the 4 has a charm all its own, with all modern comforts and the addition of a nearly 400hp V8. The Rover "personality" is still present... it does weird things sometimes, it still smells like coolant, and you know it's a Disco from the driver's seat. Definitely more modern than the 3, which seemed like a stop-gap between the old school and fully modern. The interior and the motor just wasn't there IMO.

Indeed. The LR4 is a major step forward from even the 3, which is a great vehicle in its own right. While I love the vintage charm of older stuff, the one major setback for me is handling. The LR3 handled really good through mountain curves, while the Disco 1 is borderline freighting if you don’t stick to the speed limit or below haha

I need to do the paint restore you did on my D1! Looks great! Mine is white and I'm not too worried about it because it is kind of a beater, but cleaning it up would be nice. I need to fix the sunroof leaks next. I thought about fixing the interior and selling it to find an LR3. Motor still seems ok, but doesn't run as well as I think it could. I'll probably keep it for awhile and eventually just rebuild the 4.0 myself so I know what's going on inside there. I trust my work over a shop and motor builds are easy for me.

The paint is far from perfect. It’s what I would consider barely acceptable if I were trying to sell the truck.

But, I use it to camp and haul dirtbikes around. Having something that’s wildly imperfect, is the best option for myself. Something with perfect paint, wouldn’t remain that way for long under my ownership. IMG_7493.jpg

i have a similar d1 affinity.
built this one this spring. 300tdi/ r380

where in NC are you?

Very nice! I sometimes miss my imported 300 TDI disco.

I’m right outside of Charlotte.

Taking it on a 9+ hour one way trek tomorrow, which will be its longest trip. Changed the oil, transfer case fluid, and greased all u joints/driveshafts. Crossing my fingers!
