Rhino-lining Carpet?

Has anyone ever seen anything about coating a carpet with a bedliner type material? What about the roll-on DIY Herculiner stuff? I suspect that the herculiner isn't flexible enough, but I tihnk the spray-on stuff might be flexible enough to pull it off. I'm planning on self-lining the cargo area of my Cherokee (not carpet currently, and I can't justify the price tag of local Line-X), but my carpet is a bit worn in a few spots, and was thinking of experimenting with some sort of affordable coating on it. I know that the bottoms of most auto carpet have a thin silicone like coating, and would very much be into an suggestions for good looking coats that I might be able to apply in order to get a rubberized floor. I prefer to coat the carpet in order to hide all of the vents and electronics.

Thanks for any help!

How about just getting new carpet? I know Quadratec and other Jeep suppliers have inexpensive kits, and I bet a wrecking yard has loads, if the carpet is for the Jeep in your avatar....

You'd likely spend just about the same to line it as go for a new/nicely used set....

That crossed my mind, but I'm pretty tough on carpets, was looking for something easier to keep clean/tear free.

Rip out the carpet and bedline the floor. If you bedline the carpet any moisture that gets underneath it it will be trapped and youll rust out. A lot of people just bedline the tub, the downside being there is a fair amount of heat transfer from the transmission tunnel, especially on XJs.

The would eliminate the ability to keep everything hidden under it. Believe me, it's crossed my mind (see original post) and is an option, just looking for input regarding coating the carpet.

If worried about heat, you could always add heat shielding between the trans and the body.

Most carpets are made with a rubber impermiable backing nowadays in order to keep water off the floorpan. So, that potential problem already exists. Bedlining the carpet wouldn't make it worse. But I can't say I like the idea anyway. I gotta think there's a better option. I can't imagine going carpetless would be any prettier than bedlined carpet.

Too bad nobody sells rubber matting to replace the carpet in trucks. I know Ford was doing it from the factory on some, like the Explorer SportTrac. I kinda liked it.

Actually, there is an aftermarket floor option for XJs that StumpTaco (http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16097&page=5) used that is a drop-in vinyl floor. It's definetely an option that I like better (I LOVED the vinyl floor in my father-in-laws Ranger), but it doesn't look like it will mold well. I sort of forgot about this, it's not a bad price, about $140 shipped. http://www.automotiveinteriors.com/

Thanks for the memory jarr, I think I'll look into that some more.

I seem to remember the Jeeps used by my current employer had vinyl floors on them, so I may be something you could find either in a used Jeep and take out of it or order it. The black vinyl floor has been an option in a lot of vehicles over the years, (I know that you could get them as an option in Caprice Classics, Crown Vic's, Tahoes, Suburbans, and Expeditions) so perhaps you could find a truck with a similar dimension floor plan and get the vinyl floor for it, then trim it to fit into your ride.

16 Years on ExPo. Whoa!!
If you can hang it and spray it that would work well. I have sprayed Durabak (the same product as Herculiner, made in the same place) with a $20 "rock shutz gun with a gatoade bottle (for more storage). Make sure you are in a very well ventilated area though otherwise you will stupider, permanently, the next day :)

Sounds like a neat idea to me though. If you bedline the floor of your vehicle, make sure you use a quality product like Rhino Liner. Herculiner and Durabak & cheaper are basically junk, thin, tear easily, poor UV, etc etc.

Andre, thanks, that's what I wanted to hear. Unfortunately, it appears all of the "good" liners are only available through sprayers, not for self application.

Eric, how well do those hold up? I TEAR through regular floor mats fairly regularly. I've gone throw about 4 sets in 6 years of fairly heavy duty sets in my daily driver. Maybe a set of husky mats on top of a vinyl floor would be a good compromise. Something easy to clean, somewhat resilient, but mats to keep the worst wear spots from damaging the mats.

Thanks guys!

What about removing the carpet and just bedlining the floor?

My headliner is actually bedliner material, don't have any pictures of it here at work. I'll post a few up later this evening. Previous owner had the work done though so I'm not sure on the details.

I've bed lined some misc. things in the past. Tire covers and flexible stuff. If you decide to do this I would recommend using a reputable dealer. You get what you pay for. I have used the self applied stuff on different applications and the worst part to me is fading. Even on interior applications. A dealer could get a smoother coating with the spray gun. Just a thought. The dealer I use now uses Superior brand and warrants it never to fade or will re-spray it. Would cost as much or less than a box of herculiner.
