Riggs Workwear carpenter pants -- thumbs up!

I got a pair of Riggs Workwear carpenter pants in khaki ripstop cotton at Menards in November, and I've been trying like heck to wear them out. Man, these are a well-made pair of tough pants for about $35.

They're ripstop 100% cotton, bar-tacked and reinforced at all stress points, with leather tape measure pad on front pocket (that would probably work for a knife pretty well too) and heavy nylon banding on pocket tops. Made in Mexico of US fabric. They run very true to size, and in fact maybe a little larger. (I'm normally a 36-inch inseam and these 34-inch pants are long enough). I like 'em so much I got a couple of additional pair.

As an unexpected benefit, they're really hard to get dirty! First noticed it on a trip through Colorado and Utah en route to San Diego a couple of months ago, including Bryce, Arches, and Canyonlands. Yesterday I came in from the garage with some sort of black stuff on my leg. Today they're clean. Sorta like my border collie -- dirt falls right off. YMMV here, I'm sure...

Menards, for those who don't have them in their neighborhood, is a Wisconsin-based big-box home store. They have a selection that can't be beat. I love their annual summer "made in USA" sale, where the flyer is for US-made products only -- every single one of them in a multi-page catalog. They list in the description where each item was made -- an endearing list of little towns that makes one feel good that we still manufacture things. I save that circular for months it delights me so.

Wrangler! It's a long way back to get in to my good graces. Not after that embarrassing situation about a year ago. Looks like they might have extra material around the back pocket tops though. That's what started it.

I've got a pair of Dickies I bought from Walmart for eighteen dollars back in '02. It took about two years to get the stiffness out of them.
Yeah, they made me that happy. :ylsmoke:

I'd been eyeballing these pants myself.

They are 100% cotton - did the waist shrink much going thru the dryer? I had another brand with 100% cotton ripstop that shrank quite a bit.

Thanks

...shrink much going thru the dryer?....

I can't really say -- I line dry almost everything I wear. Usually can't take inseam and sleeve shrinkage. But I'd say little to no shrinkage through a dozen washes and line dry cycles, and cheap stuff will shrink even with that gentle treatment.

I'll have to check those out, always nice to have an excuse to wander around Menards for a while.

For anyone who's interested.
I'm on my 6th pr of Riggs. I wear them as a staple, and always have 2 pairs going at the same time.
I wear the right knees out after some time because i favor that knee when I'm kneeling and playing with my son. They are well made, comfortable after a few washes, and great value. They do shrink a little in the waist and the length if you tumble dry on high. If not on high, then there is no shrinkage.
They also appear to be slightly hydrophobic.

Just stopped by Menards at lunch, Riggs are on sale for $27.98. Alas, they did not carry my fatass size.

Funny post.

I picked up some Dickies six or eight years ago, they just won't wear out. I finally took them out of daily rotation because I had pushed the limits of fashion acceptability for pleated pants by probably a decade. I know what you mean about stiffness. They felt like emery cloth until laundered about 50 times. They weren't uncomfortable to wear but the fabric was stiff as a board.

Pleated pants are out of fashion?

I have used the rigg pants now for a couple of years for works. Mostly worn in spring and fall. (shorts in the summer) They are light weight and have the ripstop fabric. I have had good luck with them. I do plumbing and heating and I tend to destroy clothes. The pants have held up better than the 7.5 oz carhatts.

Those look interesting...going to have to check them out. Thanks for the link.

[edit] Hmmm, I like most everything about those pants but the snap. It's not even a good snap based on reviews. They need to change that before I will buy...too bad.
