Roof Rack/Bars for 100 Series

Hi all,

Looking for roof rack/bars for a LX470.

I already have a Yakima cargo box I will use sometimes. Other purposes would be for a canoe or Flycraft boat.

Thinking the extended roof bars will be my best option but haven’t started exploring brands. Any recommendations?

Also, the cargo baskets look sweet but what advantages do they offer? For my purposes, seems like it may limit my ability to tie down the Flycraft as it would be wider than the basket and I’d have to lift it up to loop the straps through.

Cheapest way to go about it is find a used stock one. If you want bars that are a little less flimsy than stock you can use some 80/20 extrusion with 15 series t-nuts in the factory rails to secure it (that's what Prinsu etc all use for their bars) or go even more economical and use some uni-strut from Lowes/HD. You could cut it to fit between the stock crossbars like 80/20 and use a captive nut similar to the t-nuts to secure it, or just lay it across the top of the factory rails and secure with u-bolts to the rails if you want it to extend outside of the factory rails.

If i had to choose an aftermarket it would probably be a frontrunner rack. Not as sleek looking as some of the extrusion based racks, but the platform is going to be more solid overall. For carrying heavier loads something about relying on relatively small bolts threaded into end-tapped aluminum extrusion doesn't sit too well for me. I know a lot of guys run the extrusion based racks, but that's just my opinion. The frontrunner racks are available in different sizes as well and are generally wider than the extrusion based ones.

Another option if you don't want a big flat rack is just get aftermarket bases from trail tailor/ gamviti/ rhino rack etc... and then mate them up to a longer crossbar with nothing running front to back.

I added 80/20 to the current set roof rails in order to add a platform and it can all b taken off if needed without impacting the current set up.

My 2003 came with a Front Runner, it was damned loud and added considerable height to the truck. I ended up selling it in favor of roof bars. My cargo solution involves a Yakima SkyBox, so I needed a rack to mount it to and preferred something lightweight, low profile, and quiet. I tried a few different setups, but the best has been the Rhino Rack Aero bar set. Low profile and quiet, especially once you use the rubber filler strips to get rid of any gaps. Way cheaper than a full roof rack too.

For only carrying a canoe, boat, or roof box, roof bars are the way to go.
