Roof Rack Fuel Storage

I have a 07 Jeep JK with a full size wilderness rack.
Mid January im heading on a back country trip that i will need to be carring 2 extra Scepter Fuel Cans.
Im not impressed with the ones offered by Wilderness and could easily build or fab my own.
Laying flat on their side would be best for low hanging clearance.
Id like to see some pictures and ideas others have had for this nessesity.
Thanks for your help.

I am willing to bet that you will have mixed results from having the fuel cans laying flat like you desire in the roof rack. I only use Mil Grade Sceptor Fuel & Water containers and will generally have a leak here or there with them mounted flat. The second option would be to set them on their side with the spout located at the top. This will increase the height of the load but I have had better results and less leaking. The third of course would be to stand them up. Less chance of leaking but darn tall. I have seen them loaded toward the front or the rear. With a front load, if (when) they leak your windshield and driver area gets a good coat.....to the rear at least it is not leaking right over where you are seated and is where I carry them. I do have an Aux Fuel Can holder mounted on the rear bumper of my old Trail Ready bumper. I carry 5 gal of fuel there 24/7 and have had more folks that had to use it than I have. Ideally I would fab my swing out tire carrier to allow me to carry two cans but for now that is how I do it. From time to time I will carry water on the inside of my vehicle but not fuel. Realize that I am talking about a TJ and various other vehicle form factors allow for other carrying options.
I did see on the forum a guy who fabbed fuel carriers that were mounted on the down bars of his roof rack. A viable option I suppose but I would defer to him as to the details and functionality thus far.
I do have pictures of all of this but figure that you can get the gist from the verbiage.

I have a friend who put an ATV can on his rack.. Works out great.. I am half tempted to do it because it fits below the basket so I can keep all storage!!!

Look on the rear!!

Have been using two NATO type cans for four years on Garvin roof rack (wilderness?) with never a leak. Cans are laid on their sides on top of a rubber mat (like you get for standing on from Home Depot) and then a rachet strap across them to hold in place. Rubber mat keeps them from sliding around. Also I coated the cans (except for spout and handle) with Herculiner.

I have carried 5 gal plastic cans in a roof mounted rack on a camper shell for miles and miles, no problem except cracking my rack supports over some big bumps. It was going to and fro off road and on the Alcan hi way years ago.
I like the plastic containers with the wide bases for stability and they are shorter than the nato style. They also strap down nice.
Sorry no pics.

They are pricey, but work great. And being slim, you can place them anywhere.

We use NATO cans with a ratchet strap. They don't budge and they NEVER leak. Our rack also is made to hold 7 cans in a basket style setup. I rarely ever run that many now that we have a aux tank. It's just so much weight. But we are indeed capable of tons of fuel. We have the capability to carry 93 gallons of fuel. eeek

our family has been running jerry cans with since my grandfather was in ww2. they work great. but be careful of the rubber gasket that seals the lid. they can crack and leak if not taken care of. now the only time we have had that happen is on a can FROM ww2 so it was 50 years old. but the gasket is an easy fix. now if the cans arent kept in a heated storage then they can over time get rust and sediment inside from condensation. getting it out is as easy as water and a drop or 2 of dish soap. over all they are great cans.

the only down side to it would be weight.

They worked yesterday Thomas.

Looks to me like your trying to link photos uploaded at adventure4x4.net. Most website dont like you doing that. That probably explains why it worked at first and now it's not loading at all.

Sorry, to thread jack here but what would be the way to carry the cans if you don't have a roof rack (I have the facotry rack but no basket) or a custom bumper?

Should I just fork over the money for a roof rack basket and leave it at that? Not really comfortable with carrying it inside the vehicle.

I was going to post the link but ultimateyota seems to be down right now, but when it gets back up. Ecchamberlin made his stock rack work on his 4runner with some scepter cans. I believe he used the 2.5gal ones but the method he used would work with the 5gal cans especiall if you put them on their side with the spout up. I'll try to remember to post the link when the site gets back up.
