Roof Rack

Hey all,

I need a roof rack that can mount on my stock cross rails.

2005 Grand Cherokee

All I really need to put up there is a gas tank and a spare tire. Any suggestions for a low cost and smaller size rack?

Something like this...

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00029KBGC

What other parts do I need to mount this on the roof?

I've got one of those and use a u bolt to attatch to my load bars, its light and easy to remove by myself.

The amazon price is pretty seductive so I searched for reviews and pictures. The only review I could find was from a guy who bought it because it looked cool up there. After looking at a couple of pictures, it doesn't appear to have very many floor bars. I'll go with the Baja from Sierra.

The surco safari racks aren't bad, but they come dissassembled, so it runs the possibility of coming unscrewed and rattling. You can purchase more floor boards for the surco.

That link shows some of the mounting options that Surco sells. As long as you treat it right, it can be a nice rack (I've seen one in person, but haven't owned one).

Depending on how much the additional floor panel kit cost, you'd probably be back up to the price of the Baja Rack. The Baja is welded and comes with the mounting hardware and a cargo net.

I bought the Baja Mule today from my local Adventure Trailers supplier. Nice guys and great customer service.

Sierra Expeditions is out of stock and won't be getting any in for a few weeks. Will, from Sierra, referred me to Adventure Trailers. Luckily they are located 5 miles away from me. I was able to pick it up at their shop.

The size is great and it looks like I'll be able to fit my spare tire, emergency gas, and other misc items up there.

Install looks pretty easy. I'll take some pics tomorrow.

I've got a Yakima Megawarrior with a spare tire mount that would work great for you, but I can't seem to find anyone to ship it anywhere for less than $150...

Brian, I'm looking at getting a MegaWarrior for my 2007 FX4 SuperCrew. You got any pictures of yours? Any thoughts on why I should or shouldn't be doing this?

Also, what's your location? I might be interested in buying if you were close to NC.

I made my own out of some angle iron and bed frame, u-bolted it to my yakima bars and voila'! Roof rack! Came out pretty cool and I have about 40 bucks in it.

have the sureco on my classic with 2 load bars. ive stood up there and it is pretty strong, but it does rattle when loaded. carried my spare up there for a while (stupid idea anyway, was always afraid if in an accident the weight of the tire would rip the rack and all off and into car,traffic...) and dirt roads would drive you crazy with the weight of the tire (235-85-15) flexing the floor bars and bouncing (rattling)
great for throwing unusual shaped camping items up there (chairs,1 gallon water jugs...)
