Roof/Safari Rack and Cross Bars

This might be an odd question, but can you use longer cross bars under a cargo rack than necessary (I know I saw a picture of a vehicle that had this). The kicker here is the bars extended out beyond the cargo rack almost so you could use the bars with a kayak or bike mounts. Is this even a good idea?

Longer load bars....

I have been doing this on the drivers side of my Leer topper, great for "J" cradle for my little kayak, works great. (just don't catch them on a tree or such on a tight trail!) This frees up the basket for other stuff. (THULE towers, load bars and MOAB basket w/extension) mjmcdowell

Mine sticks out a bit on both sides- I want to say they're the 60" bars. They're higher than 6' off the ground so no issues with walking into them and it;s nice to hook the tarp to the rear one and have it wider than the opening on the camper shell. I carry my 16' kayak on the right side and mount the bike rack on the left.

Thanks guys. This is the answer I was looking for. I knew I wasn't crazy, but I could not for the life of me find the picture I saw of this setup. I don't plan on running down any narrow trails with anything on them, mostly wanted to know for transporting. Thanks again.

Kind of a bad angle but I run the longest Yakima bars they have, with the basket off I can haul two canoes. Go long and you can always cut them down.
