Roof Top Tents?

I absolutely have not one regret with my RTT. Easy to set up, large, extremely comfortable with a great view point. Nice in that I generally have no extra room inside the JK when I'm on the road anyway, so having the tent outside of the vehicle definitely makes room for bikes, kid, dog, fridge...

I think the RTT makes a lot more sense to me on a trailer. I really like being able to set up a base camp and unload a lot of stuff for daily excursions, but the quick setup is appealing. Also, how the heck do you get your dog out of one of those?

I would also probably have a lot more success getting the ladies to go camping if I had an RTT rather than the back of my Jeep or a sleeping bag on a tarp! It really is hard to beat sleeping under the stars if the weather permits and you don't have to worry about being a midnight snack!

Hi Rynomar,

If you look at this pic:

You'll see on the hood is a piece of fabric. That is just a rubber mat -- it's like a plus sized version of a drawer liner. I've also seen that stuff used to open jars and the like.

I've got my dog trained to hop the front bumper, onto the hood, and into the tent. Same thing for coming back down. The fabric helps her not slip and scratch the hood up. She's about 65 lbs, and doesn't dent the hood either.

I have a video of it at home if I can find it I will post it tonight. Only took her a couple of tries to learn.

Regards
Craig

You're absolutely right - my daughter loves it. I actually think that it has helped create alot of great experiences/memories for her in terms of going different places and sleeping in what she terms a 'cool' spot! We've had a lot of questions about this set-up and she's become an expert at answering all of them.
And the dog definitely sleeps outside!

That is a great idea. I have spoiled my dog for too long by letting her sleep in the tent. I think if I ever go for a RTT, I will just put her in the back of the Jeep, but that looks like a good way for her to get in and out. She could climb the ladder, but getting her down would be quite sporty!

Revelstoker,

I bet. I have similar memories of an old crappy popup that my dad had growing up. Don't know about keeping the pooch outside, but I know it would keep things a lot cleaner.

I wasn't able to find the video i had -- it was an old cell phone video, and that cell phone has since gone kaput. But, I found the same basic idea and yes, it's this easy:

We put fabric down because our dog is clumsy as hell, but it is optional!

That is awesome. I really think I would prefer the pooch to stay in the Jeep, but that's a great way to get them in and out!

After having tried several different set-ups, I've gone back to my RTT on my trailer. I love this setup!
