Route Huasteca to El Salto in NL, Mexico

New around here and I would like to share my most recent completed routes over the holidays.

Just before Christmas I reserved a day to get out of town with my compadre :sombrero: for a short ride through a canyon of "La Sierra Madre" near Monterrey Nuevo Leon. I promised him a route before he left town and Wed. was his only open day from work. We packed light and headed for this trail. I have also wanted to complete this trial as I have not been successful before b/c of time issues but we finally got through it. The canyon is great, wonderful scenery and tons of other routes we could take. We limited ourselves to just this one since it was only the two of us in my Tacoma. Besides, I had accepted an invited to meet with a local 4x4 club to discuss possible route which ended up being "La Olla." So we took the main HWY from Cienga to Saltillo through and over the mountain sides. The views were great. I'll load up my pics in an album later, meanwhile here is the route with a few pics.

Enjoy!

We didn't take any many pictures on the time along the route b/c my compadre :sombrero: and myself were too excited to hit the trail and forgot the cameras. DOH!
No sweat b/c we already had plans to rent a cabin in Cienega de Gonzalez (to spend NEW Year's Eve) which is right on the end/start of the trial. Went throught the trial several times after and took my family for a joy ride. The views are great down there.
While there, we continued to run into a lot of US & MX mountain climbers :REAdvRockClimber: from all over, well even from as north as Canada. To my surprise they said climbing there is better than CO b/c of the sand stone and number one reason, it is too cold up north to climb right now; that made alot of sense. We shared a few more words and I gave them few directions they needed.
Enough talk:

Great pics!

I'm concerned about the quiet civil war going on down between the gangs. Can you or someone fill in on the real details of safety south of the Texas border? I'm interested in México, but I'm scared of what's going on down there. A future trip involves running alongside the entire Texas/México border, on the Texas side, and I'm have second thoughts about doing it, even planning on only stopping in the major areas for safety. When I saw the headline for the thread, I was like "What?!" You wouldn't have dared to go down there without firearms (and I understand México has some strict firearms laws, even for its own citizens!).

I would appreciate feedback. Thanks.

THX and see this thread here:

First off, never ever think of taking a fire arm down there and clean your vehicle from any bullets or empty casings rolling around in the cab or bed. Gun laws are very strict down there. Other than that, he who doesn't owe anything shouldn't fear anything. Follow your regular abroad caution procedures and you should be fine.

Oh, try to go inside of Mexico and stay away from the border as much as possible, and you will appriciate the views more. That goes for both sides of the border. :D

Go out and enjoy yourself.

neat, the company i work for runs a geology field course and drive through that same area, but head east at the split south of santa catarina, and east through arteaga to saltillo. the drive through the dam is pretty cool. great geology as well with all of the salt cored folds. we have to do it in rental 2wd suburbans and expeditions, though, which keeps things interesting.

i've always wondered what was the other way.

once you get to el salto,, you can keep going to cieneguilla that is if the cortacaminos is already open, it got blocked by the last hurricane.

anyways, thats just the start of all the trails arround that area.

from there you should try ,,pozas del chipitin, media luna, el pilon, laguna de sanchez-to la cebolla-las trancas- galeana- pozo del gavilan- el potosi,

among lots of others.

there houndreds of jeeperos in monterrey always willing to tag along and show you the trails.

im in the mountains over there once a month at least.

this is a picture of the los lirios area " just a few trails away from where you went " this is just yesterday..

I would NOT drive along side the texas border. there is nothing to see,
and it not safe.

stay in the toll road and go down to monterrey and explore all the arteaga mountain, you will be safe as you are here in the states.
