Rtt + atc topper

Hello,

I'm looking at getting a cvt rtt and trying to find out if I need to reinforce my topper if I do get a roof top tent.

I'm looking at mt Bailey tent / believe it weighs 96lbs. I currently have a atc topper with gutter mounts and Yakima cross bars. I know the gutter mounts won't hold the tent and people. So I am going to make new rail mounts that distribute the weight across the roof and have 3-4 Yakima cross bars for the tent.

I've called atc and they only tell me the topper is rated for 150lbs, that is their dynamic number. I can't seem to get a static weight limit from them for the topper.

So my question is if I do go this route should I go ahead and fab up some support bars under the topper that tie into the rail mounts on the topper to the bed of the truck?

This is for a 2006 Tacoma, with 2 people and a 35lb dog in the tent.

Thanks,
Chris

I'd give Bobby a ring at CVT, he's very knowledgeable about toppers and his tents. I had a lengthy discussion with him at the PNW Sportsman Show and we
determined that my ARE cap would be just fine with three yakima cross bars. A lot of the strength comes from where the racks are mounted on the canopy;
you want them as outboard as possible to get the weight near the radius of the cap.

I believe that the best thing to do would be to use a Yakima track system - it will bolt directly to the topper and distribute the weight of two cross bars, tent and occupants. This is the set up I have on the ARE topper on my F350 - it has served be well with the AutoHome Columbus tent that weighs about the same - around 100 lbs.

The track rail spreads the weigh across the top of the topper without required more than 2 cross bars and without a bunch of extra custom fabrication.

Thanks guys, I'll give Bobby a ring sometine soon and get his opinion too.

I would be making my own track type system and have 3 Yakima cross bars to hold the weight.
