RTT Mounting ?

When I purchased my ARB RTT & Rack for my FJ, it came with clamps to mount the tent to the rack. I've since sold the FJ, and have a Jeep now, with a Gobi Stealth rack. I purchased a Howling Moon RTT, and need to find clamp of some sort for the cross tubes to mount it. What are you guys using? I've searched Home Depot multiple times and haven't seen anything that would work yet.

I'm waiting on my Howling Moon RTT to arrive and will be mounting it to a Gobi too. I didn't ask but I had thought it came with mounting hardware or was it just the bolts?

I wonder if some Yakima clamps would work? Or maybe just drill holes in the cross bars for the bolts?

I believe it did come with bolts. Your going to need something that half wraps the underside of the crosstube with two bolt holes to tighten it down against the tube. You DO NOT want to drill the tube.

Yakima uses something pretty close to 1 and 1/8th... But I have heard that it's a "proprietary" size.

Depending on the diameter of the Gobi tubing, you might look at these:

I know I'm not the only one using them, and I have yet to find fault with the set up.

I'm glad I came across this thread - I've been looking for an easier way to attach my RTT. I've been using the supplied bolts/nuts/aluminum plate that came with the RTT, but requires cranking each nut down with, in my case a 13mm, wrench. Rather tedious, time consuming, and knuckle scraping, but has been very sturdy and secure. This method does fit both Yakima and Thule bars with ample room for an ever larger diameter bar.

However, I would like to find a method that is as secure, but allows me to remove the RTT and re-install with a bit more ease. Not sure why I didn't think about the Yakima clamps - I only have about 50 of them from various ski/bike/cargo racks!

Those that are using the Yakima (or Thule) clamps do you feel they are secure and sturdy enough? Obviously a 150lb tent puts a bit more stress on these plastic clamps than a light aluminum bike rack or ski rack.

I'd be curious to hear everyone's experience. Dan - it seems like you are using them without issue.

Thanks!

Well I mounted up the RTT last night with the universal clamps from REI. Seems like they are going to work just fine. It sure was a pain to get the bolts through them though. Definitely would have been easier with a few people helping, but doing it by yourself isn't easy.

I used those for my RTT this weekend too. They look good but I wonder how they will hold up after a year on the trail.

I'll be using the same Yakima clamps for my tent mounting on a low profile Bajarack. I'll be mounting the tent rails perpendicular to the hinge and using the snaparound clamps to attach to the rack's top rail.
