RTT on a DD

RTTs in an alien world

I found an interesting segment in a youtube video
The video is in German only.
The part of interest is between minutes 11:00 and 12:00

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gE-4FH8EMEM

The segment is from the 1980s, it shows East German Roof Top Tents mounted on the infamous East German Trabant car. I believe the location is Hungary.
The Trabant was a very small vehicle propelled by a 600cc two-cylinder two-stroke gasoline engine.
The RTT weighs 40 kg (88 pounds)
The price was 1,584 East German Eastmarks, which does not mean much because the Eastmark was not a freely convertible currency. However, it was a lot of money.
Waiting period between order and delivery was 3 years.
The nickname for the tent was “Pension Saxenruh (Saxon Rest)” or “Saxenlaube”

During the period before the Iron curtain came down (1989) East German citizens were allowed to travel in Eastern European countries only. The destination typically was Czechoslovakia, Hungary, or Romania.

See above entry:

Sorry to butt into your thread. I am new to Expedition Portal.
I wanted to create a new thread for it but couldn't find instructions how to do it.

This is my first year with one. I keep planning to take mine off for winter, but brutal cold hasn't set in yet and we've continued camping, so it's still up there. Not having a good place to store it is also a factor. It could go in the garage one way or another, but things are really tight in there already.

I leave mine tarped on my trailer outside, I put one of these in it after use and it's not even fully saturated by the time I open it up for the next trip, I usually use the tent 1-3 times every two months.

I live in Raincouver (Vancouver) B.C. so we see a ton of rain in the winter, so far it's worked great!

Personally I wouldn't keep it on my DD because of mileage loss, grabs too much attention, loss in handling, harder to find good parking, etc.

That being said I had to keep it on my DD for the first few months I owned it because I didn't have any other storage option...

Haha, what isn't told about the video is after the said RTT stuff is a bunch of bare *** with terrible tan lines and some other crap with naked people. Honestly it's sorta hilarious when it's in German because you have no idea what's coming up next. Check out the raging beach party right after.

Adventurer, eh?
My RTT spend a few months on the truck last year, but also, the truck didn't get used too much, so it wasn't a bother. Even then, my drive to work was about 15min city (no traffic, can be up to to 30 with) .I got a trailer done this year, so left the RTT on the trailer all year and took it off and stored it for the winter, but before, it wasn't uncommon for the tent to stay on the truck for a few weeks at a time since I always hated asking for help to remove it. I felt like a pain in the donkey.

I'll pull mine off my xterra if we're not going to use it for a couple of weeks. the big pain for us is getting the tent back up. My wife has a hard time lifting it to the height of the xterra and we sometimes head out on at the spur of the moment. If it were easier for her, or if I knew my neighbors better, I'd probably pull it off after every weekend - it only takes me about 10 minutes once it's on the rack. A ratcheting box wrench made all the difference in the world.
