RTT on Chevy 1500 5ft bed

Looking for mounting options. Would prefer to keep it below the roofline a little, but high enough to fit a Gunner Dog kennel under it? similar to the tacoma bed racks.

Been out of the game for a while and getting back in.

Could also do a yakima bedrock and mount a hardshell tent on that and let the pup stay in underneath? maybe safety would be an issues, may just let him stay in the cab restrained while driving?

Same boat as you are in right now. The only good option i found was to find someone in town to fabricate a simple rack that would mount on top of the truck bed using the stale holes. I could not find anything that was made for a Chevy capable of holding the weight of a rtt and the people on it.

I would go with a frontrunner rack.... they make specific bed kits for fullsize trucks now. You can PM me if you have any specific questions about it. I ran one on my truck for about a year.

5'? The short bed is closer to 6' than 5'

You can almost certainly find a utility rack that would work. But if you want something sechsy to go with the RTT fad, you'll likely need something purpose-built.

/All these RTTs, I never realized we had so many dingos in North America.

My setup

Some Unistrut and some small pieces of 3" channel (to raise it off the rails) is all I used. Front crossmember has a small leg that goes down into stake pocket. Back one just sits there. There are two bars that go between them (fore/aft on the truck). The tent is bolted to those.

I was in the same boat - but I wanted to go high enough to be able to load on top of my caps. The bed of the Avalanche is a tad over 5' also. I drove out to Frontrunner - but they wanted a lot of money and I stood on their rack and it was flexing quite a bit with me on it (#240) - so that didn't give me a whole lot of confidence for a RTT plus me and my GF. Ended up fabbing my own.

Nice Fab work Stryder!
As for the Frontrunner rack, they are nice and sexy, but the cost of having something that nice just so you can hide it all under a RTT seems wasteful to me. It's still probably cheaper to fabricate your own for this. When i have sufficient funds for a RTT it'll be what i do.
