Subaru takes a mechanical approach with a rear viscous diff. Albeit, it is the smallest viscous diff I have ever seen but it gets the job done. The AWD varies from manual to auto.
The auto's normally function more as a FWD until slip is detected. Manuals are full time awd. I've owned a WRX and now a Forester as well. I'd give the nod to the outback over the lexus.
