Filled up the Cruiser for the first time today. 12.9 mpg. Not too shabby considering it needs gears badly and I was out on some fire roads for part of the tank. It's getting gears put on Wednesday, hopefully that will up the MPG's a little more.

Ouch!

I haven't mention yet, but this thing is SLOW. I mean, slow, slow.

LOL....no sympathy from me buddy....try a 2.25 diesel LR series III sometime; sporting a whopping 62HP. Zero to 60 in...well...a few minutes...

Finally got the Cruiser back after it's regear.

4.88's + 33x10.50-15 + 3FE = NIIIICE

It is so much more driveable. It will now hold highway speed on hills. 55-60 is a very nice cruising speed. It looks like my speedo is now 9% fast which means 60 mph indicated is actually 55 mph.

Tomorrow, if the weather holds, I'll take some pictures of my freshly rebuilt front axle. Man, it sure looks nice.

Lastly, a plug for Yota Masters in Corona. They did a very nice job. Their pricing was very good and they know their Cruisers.

Sorry to hear most of the windows are not working...

Congratulations on getting the Cruiser geared and dialed.

Sounds like you are the right owner to help this rig get over these midlife hassles.

This last week, I went on a 1,500 mile trip through Nevada. It's the first real trip the Cruiser has been on and I learned a few things about it.

  • It cruises at 55-60 nicely with the 4.88 gears.
  • I had a best tank of 16.1 mpg. Average seems to be 12-14.
  • I discovered a coolant leak, but have yet to really investigate where it is leaking from. I've noticed a few drips on the ground here and there, but have not needed to add coolant yet.
  • Just before I left on the trip, the idle became rough, though no check engine light. I checked for codes and pulled a 51. It looks like a new TPS will solve my issue.
  • While in 4LOW and backing down a hill, I could not stop the Cruiser. I had to put it in neutral to get it to stop. Not sure what the issue is here, but will probably start with a brake fluid flush to see if there is air in the lines.
  • The Fox bypass shocks with OME springs are nice. It rides better than our Merc.

A couple of new pictures

Glad to see it went to a good home.

My buddy is the one that sold it to you, good to see it continue to get built and enjoyed. Yes, it needed a regear badly, it was the only thing on the road that was slower then my 86 4x4 pu.

I noticed in the later pics, You pulled the lights that were on the front bumper. If you aren't planning on running them and still have em, I would love to get those back. I bought four of them a long time ago and have the other two on the front of my truck. They wer discontinued by Hella some years back.

They were supposed to be on loan from me to my buddy that you bought the cruiser from. They sorta got lost in the shuffle.
Lemme know what you want for them.

Hey dude, 16mpg's aint too bad at all! Glad the gear install went well. Did you end up fixing the rough idle issue with the tps sensor you mentioned?

Looks good without the rack, btw. I'm a big fan of a clean roofline!

Cheers, bro.

SUBSCRIBED! I too have an 80-Series, yes it's slow - it says so right there on the backdoor - Land Cruiser... not land speeder. hehehe But at this point in our life, I'm not in a rush and enjoy my time putting along not getting over-stress with SoCal traffic!
