John,

Haven't looking into the compatibility of the Gobi rack and the AEV snorkel, sorry. There are snorkels that do work with it though so when I decide to get one, I'm not too worried.

River rider hemi type jk snorkel will fit to any roof rack.
Enjoy

Cap't Eddie, FWIW, I have read that mounting a stiff rack on a short Jeep to the body up front - the windshield, and to the frame in the rear - the bumper, can cause downstream problems.

Hi - Can you provide links to where you read this?

I'm getting close to finishing up a Garvin Expy rack de-rust job (purchased used through here, actually), and I already had to fab rear lower mounts once (the stock ones weren't high enough to get above the swing-away on my Trailgear bumper).

...so I'd like to know if I need to fab up mounts through the rear tub corners instead. Which means I'd need corner armor too, I s'pose.

TIA.

I don't think you will need to go through the tub. However, you will not want to be directly bolted to the frame in the rear. If you fabbed up tabs that when on top of the body pucks then you will be fine.

I too have read on various jeep forrum that bolting to the body in one place and the frame in another is bad. Don't have any direct links, but can confirm that it has been discussed on various forums.

Thanks very much.

The Garvin assembly instructions for the rear mount illustrate the bottom brackets as being mounted above the body mount puck, so I found the reference confusing.

And than there's this pix where it looks like the rear struts ARE mounted at the bottom through the tub ...that just totally 360'd me.

I didn't know where else you'd want to put the thing, as originally designed by Garvin LOL ...if you put it on the bottom, you'd be short by an inch or so ...let alone if you had a body lift :) ...and in my case, the fab'd part is just a taller version of the factory bracket (taller and beefier); yeah, which means I have to shorten the rear braces.

...given all that, I am fascinated by that Alabama TJ's bottom rear mount points though. If Duane would like to explain? Really 'preciate knowin' what you did there, Duane ....

AEV ram air fits normally.

AEV pre-filter will need an extension to clear the rack.

We also have a Garvin Rack on our Jeep, this is the second Jeep we have outfitted with the Garvin Racks. Very good product and the company support is excellent!

Here is a video with the rack loaded up in the Quachita Mountains (Last Weekend)

The rear mounts on my LJ for it's Garvin rack are the same shown in the photo.

The bottom mounts are bolted the sheet metal as are the upper mounts. A cross bolt at each upper rear mount secures the legs to the Jeep. To tilt the rack rearward to switch tops or to fold the soft top you would remove the cross bolts and then rotate the rack rearward. The legs pivot at the lower mounts.

I don't think this photo will help much, it didn't in the Photobucket window, but maybe on a larger screen it will help, s here goes:

BTW, the source that causes concern regarding rack mounts to both body and frame is Dave Harriton, the founder and oqner of American Expedition Vehicles.

I agree with Beowulf that a mount that sits on top of or under a body mount isolator would cause no concern.

FWIW, the Garvin's JKU rack rear mounts now bolt to the side of the tub and not the back.

Expo rack

This has worked out great so far. Easy on and off with or with out the top by myself.

How does the rack mount with the hard top on?

Thanks,

JPK

I have an aluminum spacer about a 1/2" thick between the rack and hard top. There is a 3/4" bolt going through the top into the bracket on the inside of the jeep. All of the weight is placed onto the roll cage instead of the top. The holes are drilled through the raised ribs on the hard top and sealed using a thick, black 3M sealant. It has been working exactly as I planned with zero rattles or vibration and it sits as low as physically possible to the roof. I can try to get some close up pics.

Close ups would be great. Who makes the basic rack?

BTW, have you seen the new - but not yet for sale - AEV rack? It mounts through to the bars also.

rack

ARB makes the one that I'm using. It's a universal rack. There are ways to mount to the roll bar other than the way I did by welding. I was painfully short on time and waiting on tube clamps to ship was not an option. Tube clamps with a bracket welded to it would be the preferred method. Yes. The AEV set up is very nice as is everything they build. I will be using a Yakima cross bar in place of the spacers I am using. They are just temporary. It will make sliding the rack on a little easier.
