Samsung galaxy model gt-p3100

Howdy!
I just realized I have a Samsung galaxy model GT-P3100 tablet which has never been used. Still has the protective plastic on it.

Anyone know if these are good for using as a GPS for overlanding; downloading stuff like HEMA maps, etc.?

I'm used to paper maps and still prefer them, but a GPS is a good double/check, so considering this.

Will I need to connect it to service or does it work without cellphone service?
Sorry if its a silly question, but not too familiar with this stuff.

Thanks!

I have a similiar samsung and it is used for nav only.It workks well without service. You just have to preload maps when you have wifi.

I use a Samsung tablet paired via Bluetooth with a Garmin inReach. The larger screen of the tablet allows reakistic use of the map feature of the inReach.
