Think he said he has a high power unit, so yeah he should go get a license.. the license is applicable to your family, so your wife/kids/etc can use the high powered ones and then if you need to lend some out to neighbor kids or other ppl in your party give em the FRS radios.
Kids love em but they are operating under my license so I give em all a reminder, no cursing, no singing, no screaming, no whistling, or otherwise obnoxious behavior.. and then I still monitor their traffic and keep em on point.. My oldest has the lingo down (copy/over/etc) and i'm personally quite proud.. now I needa get him interested enough to study for the HAM test.. I really like being able to let him romp around the woods alone or go hangout with kids at some other camp and still have contact with him.
