So after landing here and looking at cars for a month and trying to find a bargain..........

I realised there are'nt any in Colombia !

Many 70 series are farm only trucks, 150K on the speedo and 500K underneath with mud everywhere inside and wear and tear like you won't imagine

All the trucks in my price range have been painted in their lifetime.

I only found one pristine example - but the price is above my range. like new but was 52K cop arround 30K dollars for a 2002

So I went to the mid range of my limit, and expect to spend a bit on maintenance and bodywork as its a 96

Here is my little 73 series gasser with LNG, it does not have a name yet but something suitable will come to mind !

LNG tank is in the rear, system under the hood, with fill nozzle.

Not sure why the photo does not show up.....here's the link to the for sale add

The bad

1 side has been repaired - new front wing, door and the rear quater panel has filler
No chassis issues, looks like a side swipe.

Keyed down the same side....

Front oil seal on the engine needs replacing,

140Kmiles on her

Colombia = Latin America !

Plans

work out how the dual fuel system works ! other than just the button on the dash

Change the name on the Police permission to have tinted windows....(truck belonged to local military guy- not a Narco traficante)

uprate the suspension

Change the rims for 16"'s so my BFG km2's fit

Build a winch bumper and fit winch

Baseline the fluids etc

Go play off road !

Nice looking green machine... I dig the fold down windshield on that model :-D

How big is that LNG tank? It looks huge judging by the cover.

Yep a tad HUGE, actually its installed at the rear and there's space infront which you can't see.

I'm not so worried about fuel bills as I walk to work and so only will be using at the weekend.

I'll either remove it or swap the tank for one that will fit underneath at the rear.

I took a quick look and there seems to be room - but I'll see later when I get the truck.

Fuel here is only about the same as US, but the LNG is way way cheaper and lots of people use it.

Your looking at 200km for a tank of LNG V's not many gallons of regular for the same price going by what I can see.

Even the microcar taxis with 800cc engine have LNG tanks so it must be cheap !

Oh well deal fell through- there were too many changes

paperwork being sent out of town and a demand for 50% up front

So I backed out- oh the joys of foreighn countries....and an in built distrust of the locals.

Off to see an 80 series this afternoon- we see how that turns out !

Sorry it fell through... It is hard to believe how expensive used cars are in Colombia! We were offered 25 grand for the Landcruiser on the coast.

Good luck in the renewed search.

Say hello to my litle friend part 2

Well I have officially given up on finding a relatively original 70 series in my price range

looked at 80 series and found them even more expencive/ V's the year

Clocked milage - almost all have prior crash damage - rough paint work
interiors trashed.

basicly 70's and 80's are worked hard and treated like crap.

1997 versions go for about 25kusd !

Being that I never know how long I'll be in country I don't want to invest in a new one

all are available- troopy -4 door -SWB and pickup- troopy new is 90000000cop about 60kusd.

So I've just put a deposit on a 2003 Prado SWB - slight lift-snorkle and owned by a dentist.

original paint and 110k kilometers

It should get me arround ok !

I encountered that same problem in Nicaragua... beaters were exorbitantly priced. I saw a 1979 2WD hilux in rough shape with a "S/V $2500" and those are USD. The worst thing about auto shopping there was that most people don't maintain their vehicles well.

Best of luck with the Prado. Like someone else said, IMHO, doctors/dentists tend to have higher standards and the finances to live up to them.
