Scepter lid gaskets - Home made

Just wanted to share this.

  • I used a 12"x12" 1/8" viton sheet stock
  • tacked sheet stock to a piece of plywood.
  • used a 3 1/2 inch holes saw to mark center and edge. did not go all the way through.
  • used a 2 inch hole saw to cut out the center
  • finished cutting the outside with 3 1/2 inch hole saw.

Its slightly larger outside diameter than stock so I had to hand trim the outside edge. I didn't have a 3 1/4 inch hole saw, but that probably is the right size, and wouldn't require any trimming.

No leaks

Nice work! I know Viton is a common material for O-Rings, and it should survive when used with gasoline. And it also has a pretty broad tolerance for temperature.

I'm curious where you found to supply the Viton sheet? Is 1/8" the right thickness for this application? (I'm trying to remember the stock gaskets I've seen and they might have been thicker.) I guess as long as it seals securely, it should be OK.

Got any clever use for the leftover circle of material you cut out of the center?

Mcmaster.com;
p/n: 9473K63, $54.50 each, 12" x 12" x 1/8"

Or this might possibly work:
p/n: 9473K69, $5.27 each, 3-3/8" OD x 1-29/32" ID x 1/8"

Keep in mind you can still buy pre-cut to spec Scepter gaskets for ~$4 each ;)

But I'm a firm beleiver, why spend $5 buying something I can build for $10 :D
