Schattenjagers too fast build up on an 05

05 Tacoma build

Well, not that it matters much in the grand scheme of things, but I wanted to put up a thread of my mods before I forget what I have done. Hopefully I will be able to fine tune this setup with a little help from you folk.

After more than 10 years as a Land Rover man, I bought this 05 Tacoma TRD SR-5 used with 8K on the clock. Heritage comes at an awful price – namely a royalty paid to whatever Land Rover dealer or repair shop is nearest – so after discovering this forum and careful study, I became a Toyota man. As you can see from the photos, it was heavily laden with stickers, which I removed the night I brought her home. I then spray painted the front “shield” under the bumper black, for a less metro look. Despite these efforts, Max, the mighty German Shepherd opined as to HIS preference in cars. You can take a Dog outta the Land Rover, but…

Next I purchased an Odyssey 2150 power plant – mainly just because. I have had my fare share of electrical problems and thought getting the best here was a solid beginning.

To further distance myself from the metro look, I took the 235/85/16 BFG AT’s off the Rover and put them on the Toyota. They fit great – no rubbing at all.

The last mod I had done in Alaska was the addition of two Light Force 170’s. Love Light Force stuff and these lights are really good at making you think a football stadium is fitted to your front bumper.

After traveling the Alaska Hwy. and The Cassiar to Seattle, I had an ARB front bumper and an OME HD spring and shock kit installed. This gave me about 3” of lift, a GREAT ride, and yes, it shredded the metro look I hate so much.

Once I arrived in Denver, I had the fender flares Line X’ed Painting cost twice as much, I have seen Herculiner and while a fine product, was not the look I was after. Rhino turns white very easy, so I looked into and chose the Line X. It looks great, wont turn white, is easy to clean, and provides a lot of side protection. Once that was complete, I installed a Yakima track and Load Warrior to the shell with steel reinforcements inside.

This week Off Road Solutions is fitting their rock sliders. That will do it for a while.

I am very please so far, however the front suspension’s articulation SUCKS. I hit a bump and it pitches the whole truck up. Not much flex at all. The rear is superb and I have no complaints. I am wondering if the lack of flex is due to a too firm of a spring in the front or the swaybars. Ideas???

The TRD suspension on these trucks does not like to flex. I think Toyota did this to make them handle more like cars, which probably helps sell a few more trucks since most people don't take them off-road. Also, they think they are getting real Bilstein shocks when, in fact, these are seriously watered-down Bilsteins. It might all work better if you took out the swaybar, but I haven't done that myself so I don't know for sure. I think the front dampers operate near the limit of their droop travel and either the springs or valving is too stiff. Whatever, it sucks. I was never very pleased with the TRD suspension package.

Get a set of the Donahoe Racing coilovers and their rear dampers. They are amazing and ride much, much better than the TRD stuff. Yes, they are not the cheapest option but I think the consensus is that either you want the best, can afford it, so you get the DR package, or you want the best but can't stomach the price for DR so you get something else (Sway-a-Way seems popular.) Some people do a hybrid, with DR front coilovers and Bilstein 5150s in the rear. That saves a few bucks, I guess. I don't know how it performs, as I went with DR all around and am very pleased.

By the way, let me know if you start shopping for a winch. I have some intel on the Superwinch EP9.0, which I fitted to my ARB bumper. It takes some work but you can end up with a nicely remote-mounted solenoid pack underhood despite what some people think.

The Line X'd flares, LF 170's and the ARB front end really set that truck off. It's looking really good :clapsmile

The shot of your dog is a riot! Glad to hear you had a successful trip down to Co.

TRD was not impressive at all - that is why I went ahead and got the OME 3" lift. Do you think I went too heavy duty on the springs since I don't have a winch? I have had OME on three other rigs (Land Rovers) and was always very pleased witht he results. I am hoping it is just the swaybars... Wishful thinking???

^+1. The LineX is a nice addition.

Did you get the 885 or 886 coils? I've run both on my truck, and I'm currently running the 886's to handle the weight of the ARB and M8000 (sitting in my garage). I removed my sway bar a few months ago, and it helps a bit. But the reality is that the long wheel base and IFS don't mix with some rocky trails. Good for rock slabs - not so good for boulders. But it does 90-something% of what I want it to do well.

Nice write up so far!

Thanks for the kind words! My concern is seen in this photo. The front wheel has hardly moved up at all and as a result torqued the entire rig. No doubt my Land Rover with it's Heavy Duty OME would have sat near level in the same spot. Now, this is my first IFS truck, but it seems to me that there should be a lot more upward mobility given the Tacoma's off road reputation.

JACKET - did you notice any ill effects on the road after removing your front sway bar? I am tempted to do this, then maybe even move down a level in spring strength if that does not help.

Lookn' Good!

I like the direction you are going in, really like the Lin-X'd flares and the Oddysey...

I took off my swaybar up front and did notice a change, I should have measured RTI before and after but...

I like the way the front feels when off road sans swaybar, just remember it's not there when you hit the pavement. My wife has driven it this way and has no complaints with the handling. And, you save about 50 lbs up front without it!

I haven't noticed any on-road ill effects since removing the sway bar (unless I make a concerted effort to swerve). Admittedly, I don't drive very hard on-road (didn't before, still don't), but the handling seems comparable to me before and after. I'll probably reinstall it in the winter, but for now during trail-blazing season, sans sway bar works for me.

Hey Louis! The rear has the OME Drakar pack and shock with the TRD locker. The articulation seems great in the back so I will leave that alone. Sooner rather than later I'll get a bumper with tire / jerry can carrier.

The sway bar comes off tonight!

Geeze, I can't read, obviously. Completely zipped past the part about your OME lift. :REOutShootinghunter

I think if the truck feels ok with the heavy springs then it's... ok. :) You'll probably be glad you have them if and when you do get a winch. I drove UncleChris' '05 without the front swaybar (and with ARB, winch, and DR coilovers.) It drove fine on the street but it definitely does like to lean more in corners and it doesn't react as quickly if you have to swerve. It takes some getting used to.

I really like the look of your truck. I have a question about your tires though, do you feel that you are getting the same benifits as the 255's without the headach and expense of regearing? I will be putting new shoes on my truck soon and have been looking at that size. Any feed back would be appreciated.

As far as your sway bar goes, I pulled mine off about a year ago and haven't looked back. I helps a little with the flex but mostly it just tracks better off road. There is a small sway price to pay on the road but since I out on my coilovers that has pretty much been fixed. I say disconnect it and see how you like it. My truck at full compression is pretty far from the bump stops but I don't have a heavy bumper to help weigh the front down.

I love the 235's and I did not regear. They pull just fine from a stop all the way through the gears. I am sure a regearing would make it quicker, but on the highway they cruise very nicely and I am getting about 22 MPG on the open road with them. 255 is a little too chunky for me AND:

Great wisom here. The 235's are light, easy on the truck, easy on the brakes, do not follow every grove in the pavement and are not super spendy.
