I'm reading the 2003 FSM and can't figure out if there's any good reason the pinion assembly (#9 in the picture above) needs to be removed prior to removing the companion flange (#10). The disassembly order says #9 before #10, but if you're just replacing the oil seal (#16) rather than doing a full r&r of the carrier maybe it's not necessary. Maybe it's just as easy as removing the nut, washer, companion flange, oil seal...reverse install with 159 lb-ft and drink beer. If only. Maybe. You do it and let us know :)

Realistically it is that simple, but I'd rather someone else find out for sure! In college I replaced the output shaft in my Honda CRX transmission. I fussed around with torque specs and getting the gears to seat correctly for days until I finally gave up and called a shop. Took it by the shop and explained what the manual said vs what I was experiencing. The guy (honda transmission expert) laughed and said something about all you kids worrying about torque specs, then proceeded to blast it together with an impact gun and handed it back free of charge.

Spoke with a drive shaft and differential specialist the other day. He said that if there is a torque spec on the pinion nut then you can simply remove the shaft, replace the seal, then reassemble. This is because the "sensitive" crush sleeve diffs do not have a torque, as you set them to a specific drag.

The FSM also shows shims/spacers to set the pinion depth/height, meaning that a crush sleeve is not used.

He was surprised to see that the Montero uses steel cases. He mentioned that I should be running Redline Shockproof in the Heavy Duty formulation. I plan on doing that after I replace the seals.

Now that you're this far along, I can ask my question. I have a donor, 91 LS 3.0, with LSD. I'd like to move it to my 89 Raider, 3.0. Somewhere I read that you can just "pull the pumpkin". I've read the FSM and it doesn't look plug and play to me. But I completely question my ability to do this. Also, the Raider has leaf vs. the 91's springs.

How straight forward is this? Does the suspension matter?

dfreem - Sorry, I'm not familiar with the gen 1s and raiders, etc. It may be possible to swap out the internals to avoid swapping from coil to leaf. That said, I have no idea if the internals are the same.

Yes you can swap pumpkins. You will need to pull each wheel shaft out about 6" and then unbolt the center pumpkin bolts and pull out.

And, while you make that sound easy and I fool myself by using the slang, the pumpkin is not something to be eaten or carved. It's this doodad on page 3-23, yes?

Sorry to sound like an idiot, especially if this answer has been posted elsewhere already, but do you have an LSD in both front and rear diffs since you put them in? Also, I get the years that the Montero Limited had the 4.9's, but did every year Montero Sport have them? I found some Sports near me and am trying to decide if I want to go and grab the gears, but don't want to waste my time if they don't have the LSD as well... Thanks!
