I'm reading the 2003 FSM and can't figure out if there's any good reason the pinion assembly (#9 in the picture above) needs to be removed prior to removing the companion flange (#10). The disassembly order says #9 before #10, but if you're just replacing the oil seal (#16) rather than doing a full r&r of the carrier maybe it's not necessary. Maybe it's just as easy as removing the nut, washer, companion flange, oil seal...reverse install with 159 lb-ft and drink beer. If only. Maybe. You do it and let us know
