That steering wheel is sweet! I need to find a SA leather wheel for my Westy!

Hodakaguy

I had the Audi wheel in the black van and loved it. I just sold this one to one of the guys on ADV with a Eurovan. Trying to restore the black VW 3 spoke to use in this one

I thought some of you might be interested in a little update.

First off, I enjoyed building this van so much and helping other to build theirs that I have started to formalize this a bit. I'm going to build custom vans or do custom mods for those that would like one built. Probably just one at a time right now. Here is a link to a Facebook page I've been toying with. Let me know what you think.

I just talked to the owners of the black van. It's running great and they love it so much that it has been promoted to "daily driver" status. It was originally bought as an extra vehicle but they love it so much that they use it all the time.

I kinda nick named the van after the fact. Around here it has become the "Night Fury" (aka Toothless). Named after the dragon in "How to train your dragons". I figured since its all black and was originally built for my newborn daughter that the name fit pretty well. That and she is now in love with dragons.

The new family sent me a few pictures of their first trip to Moab in the van over Thanksgiving and gave me permission to share them.

Great thread! I'm a former '71 Westy owner (2: 1st parted out after driving it to pieces , 2nd purchased from original owners who bought it from VW factory in Germany and shipped it back here after touring Europe) I dropped and raised the old engines multiple times, and I'm enjoying your thread and the modern perspective.

This photo comparison of the 3 vans is helpful. Thanks for an educational and entertaining thread.

PS- did you keep the Aussie pup?

Ever seen "The Princess Bride"? There is a part where Wesley is telling a story about the Dread Pirate Roberts. At the end of each day he says "Good job, gods night, I'll most likely kill you in the morning" every day for 3 years. This sums up the existence of Samba the Aussie! :coffeedrink:

(So he is still with us and growing into a good dog.......someday )

Yes, I sold my '71 nearly 20 years ago- they have a long life in sunny SoCal. Still see many on the local roads.

I sold mine to my neighborhood mechanic. He was retiring- fixed the van up a bit and sold it for double the price I had charged, but I thought: he can use it for his future days off. Can only imagine what it would be worth- restored- today. (Can you put Subaru engines in the old models?)

Ha! I can relate- I've heard/seen that Aussies are very smart pups, but like most "working dogs" need constant supervision/training/attention to keep from making their own fun.

I had a smart black lab mix, now I have a 20 lb. poodle whose intelligence is frightening at times. They both have me well trained... and both have been good Baja travelers.

I've always thought they would work well at sea level where heat isn't required.

Yes!

....and Porsche too :coffeedrink:

My Aussies have always been very well trained......they. Are just lunatics when "off command" ......or maybe im the lunatic for continuing to get Aussies :wings:

I think I need a bigger truck!
I saw one with a Ford Ztec 2.0L 16v in it the other day (Bostig??). Sweet kit, looked almost stock? Subaru engines would also be a nice combo.

Porsche engine, oh baby!!

Just an update. I talked with the new owner of this van last week to make sure it was treating her and her family well. She still LOVES the van!!! It has been nicknamed "Night Fury" after the "How to train your dragon" dragon.
